Notes: [Auszug] Bacterial communities provide important services. They break down pollutants, municipal waste and ingested food, and they are the primary means by which organic matter is recycled to plants and other autotrophs. However, the processes that determine the rate at which these services are supplied ...

Notes: [Auszug] Denys–Drash syndrome is a rare human developmental disorder affecting the urogenital system and leading to renal failure, intersex disorders and Wilms' tumour. In this report, four individuals with this syndrome are described carrying germline point mutations in the Wilms' tumour suppressor ...

Notes: Abstract Various aspects of the classification tree methodology of Breiman et al., (1984) are discussed. A method of displaying classification trees, called block diagrams, is developed. Block diagrams give a clear presentation of the classification, and are useful both to point out features of the particular data set under consideration and also to highlight deficiencies in the classification method being used. Various splitting criteria are discussed; the usual Gini-Simpson criterion presents difficulties when there is a relatively large number of classes and improved splitting criteria are obtained. One particular improvement is the introduction of ‘adaptive anti-end-cut factors’ that take advantage of highly asymmetrical splits where appropriate. They use the number and mix of classes in the current node of the tree to identify whether or not it is likely to be advantageous to create a very small offspring node. A number of data sets are used as examples.

Notes: Abstract It is well known that the behaviour of the simulated annealing approach to optimization is crucially dependent on the choice of temperature schedule. In this paper, a dynamic programming approach is used to find the temperature schedule which is optimal for a simple minimization problem. The optimal schedule is compared with certain standard non-optimal choices. These generally perform well provided the first and last temperatures are suitably selected. Indeed, these temperatures can be chosen in such a way as to make the performance of the logarithmic schedule almost optimal. This optimal performance is fairly robust to the choice of the first temperature. The dynamic programming approach cannot be applied directly to problems of more realistic size, such as those arising in statistical image reconstruction. Nevertheless, some simulation experiments suggest that the general conclusions from the simple minimization problem do carry over to larger problems. Various families of schedules can be made to perform well with suitable choice of the first and last temperatures, and the logarithmic schedule combines good performance with reasonable robustness to the choice of the first temperature.

Notes: The Vibron Viscoelastometer is useful for obtaining dynamic mechanical properties of film and fibers in atmospheres at 0 and 100% relative humidity. No apparatus has previously been available for obtaining dynamic mechanical properties in a gas medium; however an apparatus and procedure have been developed for measuring these dynamic properties in a gas medium using the Vibron instrument. This technique will be useful in studies on the effects of different gases on polymers in the process and on the effects of gas treatments on materials. A new gas cell which is adaptable for other mechanical testing instruments such as the Instron, Tensometer, and Torsion Pendulum is also discussed.

Notes: Dynamic mechanical properties of the ultrahigh molecular weight nylon 66 film and fiber produced by thermally induced solid-state polycondensation are presented. The α peak temperature of tan δ of these treated films and fibers is shifted 8-32°C higher than that of the appropriate control nylon 66 (film and fiber) while the maximum height of the tan δ peaks is decreased. The treated fibers have higher moduli at all temperatures (20-145°C) and humidities (30% RH) than do their control counterparts. The moduli of the treated fibers at 30% RH compare favorably with control yarn at 0% RH. These yarns also have a greater per cent of the 25°C modulus retention as temperature increases.
