Notes: Abstract.  The environmetrical analysis carried out has indicated that the short-term water quality survey may give a very important information on the latent factors influencing the water quality of Yantra river basin. The principal components analysis carried out reveals that at least four principal components are necessary for multivariate statistical modeling of the water quality – combination of natural and anthropogenic influences (“mixed” factor) reflecting parameters such as water hardness, marine influence, organic pollution; typical anthropogenic influences (“anthropogenic” factor) explaining the metal contamination of the river water; everyday wastes, usually N-containing pollutants such as nitrates, nitrites or ammonia, form the “N-containing wastes” factor and a “temperature” factor formed by typical physical parameters such as water and air temperature. The formation of these special features of the river waters from Yantra basin is also confirmed by the results of cluster analysis (variable clustering) where the content of the significant clusters of the variables is the same as the content of the principal components modeling over 75% of the total variance of the system. Additionally, the cluster analysis of the objects has proved that the water quality during both sampling traverses is very stable and reproducible. Few exceptions are observed due to momentary local pollution in an industrial area along the river stream. Comparison with standard requirements for water quality has indicated that the Yantra river waters are of high quality and could be used after minor pretreatment as potable water sources. The environmetrical approaches applied reveal a specific information concerning the river water quality. In this way the ecological problem treated has not a local importance but suggests a strategy for estimation of similar ecosystems in global sense.

Notes: Summary Experimental Factors Estimation in Nephelometric Procedures The nephelometric determinations of low concentrations of sulphate ions are usually influenced by a variety of experimental factors such as presence of stabilizing agents, acids, interferences, equilibration and stirring time etc. The present study makes an attempt to estimate the weight of 6 input factors at different levels of sulphate concentrations by the use of the economic experimental design known as random balance method. It is found that some of the input factors (presence of stabilizing media, acidity) are of higher rank than others (equilibration time or barium ions concentration). Using these results it is easy to find optimal conditions for micro-determination of sulphates by nephelometry.

Notes: Summary Two analytical methods for determination of nitrate in airborne dust samples — spectrophotometry and direct potentiometry with ionselective electrodes — are compared. Different aerosol samples collected by an impaction cascade device and a high-volume filter sampler and model “powdered” dust samples were analysed. It was shown that direct potentiometry is quite satisfactory for nitrate determination irrespective of collecting technique if the known addiMikrochim. Acta 1977 II-6 tion procedure is used. The spectrophotometric determination of impaction-collected aerosol samples suffers from interference by the copper foil used for collection. The advantage of the spectrophotometric method is that concentrations as low as 0.25μg/ml can be determined reliably. The advantage of potentiometry is that it gives a simple analytical technique for samples containing down to 1 ppm NO3 − and it can readily be automated.

Notes: Summary A simple, rapid and reproducible potentiometric titration method for determination of both bromide and chloride in airborne dust is described. The use of a precise microburette and a differentiating recorder allows good resolution of the two species determined. The method can be easily applied for routine environmental control analysis.

Notes: Abstract Multivariate statistical analysis of sediment data (information matrix 123 × 16) from the Gulf of Mexico, USA shows that the data structure is defined by four latent factors conditionally called “inorganic natural”, “inorganic anthropogenic”, “bioorganic” and “organic anthropogenic” explaining 39.24%, 23.17%, 10.77% and 10.67% of the total variance of the data system, respectively. The receptor model obtained by the application of the PCR approach makes it possible to apportion the contribution of each chemical component for the latent factor formation. A separation of the contribution of each chemical parameter is achieved within the frames of “natural” and “anthropogenic” origin of the respective heavy metal or organic matter to the sediment formation process. This is a new approach as compared to the traditional “one dimensional” search with a limited number of preliminary selected tracer components. The model suggested divides natural from anthropogenic influences and allows in this way each participant in the sediment formation process to be used as marker of either natural or anthropogenic effects.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The paper deals with the application of fractional experimental design, random balance method and full experimental design with two levels of variation of the input parameters for the estimation of the significance of chemical and instrumental factors in different analytical problems. The example chosen refer to the fluorimetric determination of aluminium (estimation of three chemical and two instrumental factors for optimization purposes), the ranging of environmental factors in the determination of the protective ability of polymer coatings (seven parameters are included) and the determination of several anions in aerosol samples by ion chromatography (the significance of three operational parameters for model solutions is considered). It is shown that the experimental design strategies can be used as reliable and quick tools for ranging and parameter estimation.
