The amorphous intermetallic materials of FeTe2 and CoTe2 have been synthesized by the reaction of the Zintl anion, Te2−2, with Fe2+ and Co2+ in aqueous solutions. The magnetic properties of these materials have been examined as a function of temperature between 2.5 and 300 K. Both FeTe2 and CoTe2 exhibit strong antiferromagnetic coupling between localized moments but without long-range magnetic ordering. FeTe2 and CoTe2 undergo a transition to a spin-glass state at 5 and 6 K, respectively. Thermal treatment of the freshly prepared sample of FeTe2 at a moderate temperature changes it to the crystalline phase which shows 3D antiferromagnetic ordering at ∼100 K.
