Notes: A 23-year-old man presented with annular and arcuate, hyperpigmented, itchy, scaly plaques over the trunk and lower extremities for 5 years progressing to verrucous papules and nodules for the last 1.5 years. He also had nontender, inguinal and axillary lymphadenopathy. Skin and lymph node biopsies showed granulomatous inflammation and special stains demonstrated long septate hyphae. Tissue cultures grew Trichophyton verrucosum. The patient was treated with itraconazole 100 mg twice daily for 8 months, resulting in complete clearance of the lesions.

Notes: Summary The characteristic polyacrylamid electrophoresis in the cryoprecipitates of patients with haemophilia A have been demonstrated. It extends mainly into protein fractions rich in carbohydrates. This may be due to some conformatorial changes in proteins after cryorisation.

Notes: Abstract —Maximum entropy spectral analysis (MESA) has been applied to 24 series of hourly daily data and only one daily mean series for the horizontal (H) and vertical (Z) components of the geomagnetic field for the year 1983 as observed at Narssarssuaq, Greenland (71.2°N, 36.7°E) (gm coordinate). The method has isolated some prominent medium frequency signal components. The maximum peaks for H are at 06 hr (0.174 cycles per day (cpd), 3.2 × 104 db) and 08 hr (0.09 cpd, 3.5 × 104 db). Similarly, the maximum peak in Z is observed at 04 hr (0.114 cpd, 5.7 × 104 db). The spectral results for the daily-mean data indicate periods are greater than two days, with 178.5 days (nearly semiannual) being common to both H and Z. Other harmonics have been found for all the series of H and Z components which are mainly caused by the "Effective Period", i.e., the period produced by the combined effect of the sunspot numbers and the sun’s rotation period. Such frequencies correspond very well with those found in the geomagnetic indices A p  , C p and AE. This suggests that the disturbance transient variations are caused by viscous interaction of the solar energies emanating from sunspot regions with the outermost magnetospheric boundary which, in turn, influences the magnetosphere-iono sphere coupling and produces the medium intensity long-duration continuous auroral activities (MILD CAAs) over high latitude regions. Thus, the higher latitude geomagnetic activities are nothing but the "effective period driven MILDCAAs" having a recurrence tendency of 27/n, where n is an integer.

Notes: Summary Low concentrations of hydroxyurea stimulated the growth of the blue-green alga Anabaena variabilis that had been pretreated with sublethal concentrations of chloramphenicol or of certain nucleic acid base analogues. When supplemented to the culture medium, hydroxyurea also counteracted the growth inhibitory effect of chloramphenicol on this organism. In contrast, when A. variabilis cells grown in the presence of hydroxyurea were subsequently treated with chloramphenicol, they were found to have become highly susceptible to the growth inhibitory effects of chloramphenicol. The growth of hydroxyurea pretreated cells in basal medium was attended by a lag that was shorter than that of untreated controls; on the other hand, when hydroxyurea pretreated cells were inoculated into chloramphenicol-supplemented medium, they exhibited a longer lag than that shown by untreated cells in chloramphenicol. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the probable effects of hydroxyurea and chloramphenicol on certain enzyme systems.

Notes: Abstract A pharmacokinetic study of demeclocycline was carried out following intravenous administration at 5 mg/kg body weight in lactating goats. Demeclocycline appeared within 5 min in plasma, interstitial fluid (isf) and urine, while it appeared at 1 h in milk. Peak concentrations of 21.70±4.06, 2.67±0.23, 5.65±0.45 and 82.23±10.06 μg/ml were attained at 5 min and at 6, 8 and 8 h in plasma, isf, milk and urine respectively. A potentially therapeutic concentration of ≥0.5 μg/ml was maintained from 5 min–36 h, 30 min–30 h, 1–36 h and 5 min–48 h in plasma, isf, milk and urine respectively. The drug was detectable in all the above biological fluids for at least 48 h. A low distribution half life (t1/2α) of 0.44±0.04 h and a high elimination half life (t1/2β) of 19.24±1.22 h denote rapid distribution but very slow elimination of the drug in goats. A high tissue plasma concentration ratio [K12:(K2I−β)] of 5.12±0.97 during the elimination phase and a Vdarea of 1.59±0.18 L/kg indicate uniform distribution of demeclocycline in the tissues and body fluids of goats. The dosage regimen for maintaining minimum plasma concentration (C∞ min = MIC) of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 μg/ml at selected dosage intervals of 12 and 24 h was also calculated.

Notes: Abstract Removal of dyes (Crystal Violet, Methylene Blue, Malachite Greenand Rhodamine B) from aqueous solutions at differentconcentrations, pH and temperatures by Neem sawdust has beencarried out successfully. The percentage of the dye adsorbed byNeem sawdust decreased from 91.56 to 78.94 and 84.93 to 71.25 for Crystal Violet and Malachite Green, respectively, when the concentration of the dye was increased from 6 to 12 mg L-1 at atemperature 30 ± 1 °C and pH 7.2. Adsorption ofother dyes (Methylene Blue and Rhodamine B) also decreased withincreasing concentration of the dye in solutions. The values ofthe rate constant of adsorption (k ad) of Crystal Violet at25, 35 and 45 °C were found to be 10.80, 10.52 and 10.25 × 10-2 min-1, respectively. The values of the Langmuir constant for adsorption capacity (Q o) of Crystal Violet on the adsorbent varied from 4.44 to3.99 mg g-1, respectively, with the increase of temperaturebetween 25 to 45 °C. The equilibrium data followed theLangmuir model of adsorption. The variation in the extent ofremoval with pH has been explained on the basis of surfaceionisation and complexation. Thermodynamic parameters(ΔG, ΔH and ΔS) have also been determinedto explain the results.

Notes: Abstract The study elucidated the pharmacokinetics of streptomycin in healthy lactating she-buffaloes after a single intramuscular (IM) injection (10 mg/kg). The drug attained its peak concentrations of 24.39±2.67, 0.45±0.05 and 5.06±0.18 μg/ml at 1, 4 and 1 hour in plasma, milk and uterine fluid respectively. Calculations based on the assumption of a 2-compartment model gave a plasma t1/2 (β) of 4.01±0.44 h and an apparent volume of distribution [Vd(area)] of 0.47±0.06 l/kg. The drug was detectable in the plasma, milk and uterine fluid for 30, 8 and 12 hours, respectively. A therapeutic concentration of the drug was maintained for 6 to 7 hours in the plasma and for around 1 hour only in the uterine fluid. However, a therapeutic level could not be achieved in milk at any time. The results suggest that the drug can be used clinically by the IM route against streptomycin susceptible systemic infections but not those in the uterus and mammary gland.
