Notes: This paper essentially seeks to provide a theoretical construct to the experimental studies on the acoustoelectric amplification in piezoelectric semiconductors showing that the attenuation of an acoustic wave crosses over to its amplification when electron drift velocity exceeds the acoustic wave velocity. In this paper, first, a phenomenological theory is developed to study the relative change in electron mass and collision frequency when an acoustic wave propagates through piezoelectric semiconductors. Then, analytically, we have shown that this nonlinearity in electron mass and collision frequency arising due to the electric vector of the field associated with the wave can also explain this behavior. Numerical computations are made for a typical case of n-InSb at 77 K.

Notes: Some coupled nonlinear equations are considered for studying traveling-wave solutions. By introducing a stream function Ψ it is shown that if one of the solutions is of the form v≡v(x−ct), the other also must be of the form u≡u(x−ct). In addition, the possibility of including cubic nonlinear terms has been considered and such a system, assuming that the solutions are of the traveling-wave type, has been solved.

Notes: Summary The present note makes use of electromagnetic equations of Maxwell and those of mechanical motions to work out the problem of disturbances in two perfectly conductive media—an ideal liquid and a perfectly elastic solid-acted upon by a magnetic field perpendicular to their plane of contact. The displacement suffered by solid medium has been determined when a tangential force, exponentially decaying with time, acts in the plane of contact of the two media. The solution of the problem is achieved by using the method of Laplace transform.

Notes: Summary The present note is concerned with the investigation of responses under random processes of a beam-plate placed in a magnetic field which is transverse in nature. The distinctive features of the motion have been pointed out.

Notes: Summary A simplified theory of yield hinge surfaces usually applied in plastic collapse analysis of thin plates in transverse loading is modified and used to simulate deformation modes in square tubes during opposed transverse loading. The experimental results of maximum load observed in several cases are compared with the theoretical estimates based on rigid perfectly-plastic material model. Excellent corroboration between the experimental results and theoretical predictions were obtained.

Notes: Summary A simplified theory of yield hinge surfaces usually applied in plastic collapse analysis of thin plates in transverse loading is modified and used to simulate modes of plastic collapse of rectangular tubes in opposed transverse loading. The experimental results of maximum load observed in several cases are compared with the theoretical estimates based on rigid-perfectly plastic material model. The agreement between the theoretical and experimental results was found to be generally satisfactory.

Notes: Abstract A procedure for the dynamic initialization of wind and temperature fields within the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is presented. The procedure uses transilient turbulence theory to assess the turbulent fluxes from observed wind and temperature data, which are used to estimate the eddy transfer coefficients, so enabling a local closure ABL model to be integrated forward in time to a new steady state. The method has been applied to initialize kytoon data taken at Kharagpur (22.3° N, 87.2° E) during the MONTBLEX field programme. Results of a case study for 17 June 1990 are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The equations of elasticity, the equations of electricity supplemented by the constitutive equations of a piezoelectric quartz have been employed to investigate the deformation of an annular piezoelectric disk containing a concentric inhomogeneous rigid inclusion. The effects on the deformations have also been discussed in the paper.
