    Notes: Barley varieties were screened for their efficient drought enduring ability and associated characters which may be useful in breeding programmes. The characters studied were: relative water content, content of proline, chlorophyll stability index (CSI), and percentage grain loss per plant due to water stress subjected to 10 days from jointing to boot stage. Proline and chlorophyll stability index were greatly associated with drought response (r =+0.54; -0.49), flag leaf area (r =+0.69; -0.51) and, to a certain extent, with leaf number (r = -0.35 and +0.34). Among the studied 19 varieties of barley, only three (DL 192, DL 36, DL 3) showed high enduring ability, of these the former two fall in the early, and the last one in the late flowering group. Morphological architecture of DL 192 had gathering type tiller (narrow tiller angle), wider and floppy leaves and it also bears physiological characters (high proline and high relative water content, and low value of chlorophyll stability index) necessary for drought resistance. DL 3 and DL 36 had dispersing type tiller (wider tiller angle) and erect leaf with good leaf area/plant, but unit leaf area was low in DL 3 (relates with shading behaviour reducing water loss). Other relations of drought resistance are briefly discussed in the text. An appraisal of the various traits revealed that high proline content, and low CSI (biochemical characters), earliness, larger flag leaf area and fewer leaves per plant (morphological characters) were directly correlated with productivity of the cultivars under drought conditions. These characters could be used as a guideline for breeding drought resistant cultivars of barley.

    Notes: Summary The outstanding effects of potassium deficiency on Japanese mint during winter and rainy seasons were marked accumulation of ammonia, amide and nitrate nitrogen with corresponding decrease in protain ntioen indicating arrested protein synthesis at ammonia- and amide formation stages as these fractions showed large proportion in the pool of soluble-N. The accumulation of soluble-nitrogen could be correlated with high respiration rate. Further, potassium-deficient plants had lowe value of ‘rest’-N and tootal N in winter and vice a versa in rainy season. In spite of an increased per cent essential oil content (ml/100 g dry weight), the total essential oil production (ml/plant) was low. In general, rainy season plants had higer percentage of essential oil and total oil/plant but showed lower values of all the forms of nitrogen.

    Notes: Abstract A foliar spray of boron (1 g borax litre-1) at the reproductive stage of sorghum varieties (PC 23, PC 9, PC 6 and HC 136), generally, increased the phosphorus content (24.5 per cent) and water soluble sugars (13.3 per cent) of seed coatings. The nitrogen content of a sorghum crop grown in a boron deficient soil improved only slightly (4.5 per cent) in spite of an elevated nitrate reductase activity (19.5 per cent). Such effects of boron seem to be associated with an increase in seed yield (14 per cent) and an improvement in the germination energy index. The magnitude of response was greater in variety HC 136 than the others.

    Notes: Summary The objective was to find the optimum range of water contents for inducing better growth, physiological efficiency and yield potential of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. var. K18). A pot culture experiment was conducted in the Division of Crop Physiology and Biochemistry Kanpur-2. The plants were subjected to various soil moisture stresses,i.e., 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, 0.60 and 0.75 atm tension throughout the crop growth period measured by irrometers. Plants maintained at 0.45 soil moisture tension required 19.07 litre of water and had the best water use efficiency (1765 mg dm/litre of water) which favourably influenced the leaf water balance (85.9%), plant growth as measured by plant height (85.4 cm) and tiller production (35.6) per hill, photosynthetic efficiency (2.185 mg CO2/g dm/h), grain number (722) and grain yield (33.7 g) per hill while plants irrigated at a tension greater than 0.45 SMT did not develop as well. However, protein and gluten percentage increased gradually with the subsequent increase in soil moisture tension. On the other hand respiration rate (2.090 mg CO2/g dm/hr) and leaf area (4375 cm2) were recorded to be the highest at 0.60 and 0.30 atm SMT respectively. Thus it is suggested that for reaping high harvest of barley crop, the physiological need of water (19.07 litre) in total of plant life should be made available through scheduled irrigation based on maintenance of plant at 0.45 SMT from seeding to maturity.

    Notes: Summary Potassium deficiency resulted in a increased accumulation of total phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus and sugar phosphate which suggested some interference in phosphorus metabolism predominantly beyond the sugar phosphate synthesis stage. Roots appeared to be a reservoir for accumulation of various phosphorus fractions of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L. var.piperascens). A higher respiration rate under potassium deficiency might be one of the factors to retard the inclusion of inorganic phosphorus into structural components, resulting in poor formation of organophosphorus compounds needed for plant growth and development. In spite of an increased essential oil content (ml/100 g dry weight) in a phosphorus deficient situation, total essential oil production (ml/plant) was low. Foliage growth, essential oil content and respiration was higher between 60 to 80 days and seemed to be associated with a high intensity of enzymatic and metabolic activity, as observed in various phosphorus fractions rising to a very high value after 80 days of crop growth.
