Summary It was found that n-octadecanol forms an oriented film on the carbonized part of the surface of a complex carbon-silica adsorbent. Alcohol molecules in this film lie flat in relation to the carbon surface. At a temperature close to the disintegration point (about 82°C), the surface film is composed of two layers of molecules. Both differential thermal analysis and inverse gas chromatography, or the last method only, were used to determine the structure of the surface film and the amount of n-octadecanol bonded in it.
