    Notes: Summary The anatomy of the rabbit cecum was investigated using macroscopic dissections, vascular injections, dried total specimens, light microscopy, and scanning and electron microscopy. The morphology of the three portions of the cecum (ampulla coli, corpus ceci and appendix vermiformis) is described. For comparison, the proximal colon, ileum and sacculus rotundus were also investigated. The thickness of the different layers of the intestinal wall of each area was measured. The arterial supply and mesenteries of the cecum were also studied. The rabbit cecum represents structurally a highly developed organ.

    Notes: Summary The anatomy of the cecum of the vole, Microtus agrestis, was investigated using macroscopic dissections, “wet” and dried total specimens, and correlated light, scanning and electron microscopy. The cecum of the vole reveals a series of structural differentiations including a mural lip in the ampulla ceci and a spiral fold in the corpus ceci. The mucosa covering the cecal wall possesses short, wide-opened crypts and differs from the classical descriptions of the large intestinal mucosa. Fine structural observations suggest the cecal epithelium to be capable of active absorption. The morphological findings are correlated with the herbivorous habit of the vole and compared with observations in the rabbit and other rodents.

    Notes: Summary The cecal anatomy of the dwarf hamster, Phodopus sungorus, was investigated macroscopically and at the light, transmission electron microscopic and scanning electron microscopic levels. In addition, the arterial supply to the cecum and connecting mesenteries were elucidated. The cecum is divisible into an ampulla ceci and a corpus ceci. In the former, the differentiation of the ileocecal orifice and circumventing fold is described. Scanning electron microscopically, the surface topography of the cecum appears as ring-walled elevations with a central depression and looped configurations, which correlate light microscopically to a “rolling-hills” type mucosa with wide-opened crypts. This type of mucosa is set in contrast to the classically described large intestinal mucosa in man and some other mammals. The present observations are compared with descriptions made on the cecum of the common field vole, Microtus agrestis, also a myomorph but belonging to another subfamily.

    Notes: Summary In a series of comparative anatomical studies on the ceca of various mammals the cat was chosen as representative of a “typical” carnivore. In the domestic cat, the cecum is conspicuously small and macroscopically relatively undifferentiated in comparison to most herbivores. Microscopically (light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy), however, it is characterized by an abundance of goblet cells and enterocytes rich in organelles, suggestive of functional activity. In addition to the morphological description, which also includes arterial supply and mesenteries of the cecum, the discussion is focussed on 1) the possible functional significance of the numerous goblet cells 2) a general categorization of the different types of ileal-caeco-colical junctions and 3) speculations concerning the justification for considering the carnivore cecum as being rudimentary.

    Notes: Summary The anatomy of the cecum of the laboratory mouse and rat was studied from a comparative standpoint. The topographical situation, mesenterial connections and arterial supply to the ceca were examined macroscopically. Dried specimens were made to study the morphological form and internal structures. Microscopically, at the light, transmission and scanning electron microscopic levels, the characteristic structural aspects of the ceca of both species were observed. The mucosa of the mouse cecum is arranged in soft-contoured, looped configurations (SEM), which appear as wide-opened crypts light microscopically. The rat has a similar appearance except that the configurations are more densely arranged and the crypts narrower. With TEM, the cecal epithelial cells of both species display typical features of intestinal absorptive cells. The observations made in the rat and mouse are compared with eachother and with other species where detailed information is available.

    Notes: Summary The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the cecum of the gerbil was investigated using dissections, dried specimens and vascular injections as well as light-, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy. The cecum of the gerbil is a voluminous organ, possessing slight sacculations and only poorly developed taeniae. The base or ampulla ceci is slightly dilated and more voluminous than the corpus ceci, which decreases gradually in diameter to the blind-end, the apex ceci. A half ring-fold limits the entrance to the proximal colon from the ampulla. A wide-opened communication exists between ampulla and corpus ceci. The scanning microscopical appearance of the cecal wall takes the form of raised elevations circumventing a central depression. The cecum is lined internally by a tall columnar epithelium displaying a well-developed microvillar border and possessing numerous cellular organelles.

    Notes: The population dynamics of the jejunal epithelium of mice maintained on a semi-synthetic diet deficient in the essential fatty acids (EFA) has been investigated. Colchicine was employed to collect mitotic figures for the determination of mitotic indices. Twenty-five crypts in longitudinal section were counted per animal and the mean mitotic index computed as the number of mitoses per total number of crypt cells. EFA-deficient animals had a mean mitotic index of 36.56 as compared with 26.51 and 16.74 for the linoleic acid-supplemented and chow-fed control animals, respectively. Counts of the number of epithelial cells on one side of a villus and crypt indicated that the height of the villi, but not the crypts, of the EFA-deficient animals was significantly lower than either control group. In the EFA-deficient animals the mean percentage of villi having extrusion zones exceeded that of both control groups. Radioautography demonstrated that 36 hours after injection of tritiated thymidine the majority of villi in the EFA-deficient animals were labeled at their tips, whereas in control samples label was restricted to the lower one-half to three-fourths of the villus. Thus, EFA-deficiency induces increased rates of mitosis, migration and sloughing, resulting in alterations in villous architecture.
