Notes: Abstract Small angle X-ray scattering experiments performed on amorphous two-component transition metal-metalloid alloys have shown that these materials decompose on annealing clearly before crystallization starts. This process influences the behaviour of physical properties in a similar way as structural relaxation does. To separate the two effects mainly composition dependent properties must be compared with others which are mainly sensitive to structural changes. In this paper it is shown that the ratio of the annealing-induced changes of the temperature coefficient of the resistivity and of the residual resistivity is determined by the underlying elementary process. The two values resulting for predominating structural relaxation and for predominating decomposition seem to be universal and are compatible with a theory of phonon-controlled conductivity in high-resistance conductors.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure of electrodeposited amorphous Co−P and Ni−P on a scale of some nm was investigated with the aid of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The combination of the two techniques allowed us to separate the contributions of the surfaces to SAXS. Fork 2〉0.6 nm−2 the diagrams could be analyzed with respect to the scattering from the bulk alone. Both methods exhibit a granular structure of the material due to fluctuations of the mass density and the composition on a scale of 2–5 nm. The amplitude of the fluctuations is appreciably higher in Co−P than in Ni−P. There is no evidence that the inhomogeneities may be responsible for the magnetic anisotropy observed on Co−P.

Notes: Abstract Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments and a magnetization study have been performed on Ni84.8P15.2 and Ni82.5P17.5 alloys. It is shown that these alloys exhibit an inhomogeneous two-phase structure with regions having phosphorus contents below the average concentration. The amplitude of the concentration fluctuations determined by SAXS agrees with that derived from a magnetic analysis.
