    Notes: Abstract Vicia faba plants grown under water deficit were found to have guard cells considerably smaller than those of plants grown under well-watered conditions. Stomala of plants adapted to drought conditions have been observed in past studies to maintain opening at plant water potentials lower than those of plants not so adapted. By employing the geometric interpretation of the mechanical advantage (Wu, Sharpe & Spence, 1985), an anatomical/mechanical basis was found that helps explain how such opening in drought conditions can occur. The geometry and resulting mechanical properties of small stomata, in contrast to larger stomata, give them the capability of opening or maintaining open pores with lower guard cell turgor pressures, relative to the turgor of the surrounding epidermal cells.

    Notes: Abstract. Previous mathematical analyses of stomatal mechanics have demonstrated, and experimental measurements have confirmed, that the turgor-generated force of the epidermal cells dominates that of the guard cells in determining aperture. DcMichele & Sharpe (1973) termed the phenomenon the mechanical advantage of the epidermal cells, while Cooke et al. (1976) expressed it as an antagonism ratio. Both of these formulations, however, have theoretical or practical limitations. This study presents a biophysical analysis demonstrating that the effective forces in the stomatal system may be studied in terms of simple stomatal geometry. From this analysis, the mechanical advantage can be redefined and interpreted based upon simple geometric relationships calculated from measurable anatomical dimensions.

    Notes: The general systematic procedure is described for determining the magnetic space group (Shubnikov group) of a crystal from the magnetic point symmetry found from nuclear magnetic resonance data (Heesch, standard representation) and the crystallographic structure. The aspect group, which is the observed n.m.r. symmetry, is therefore defined and the Heesch groups which are related by the time inversion operation for magnetic moments to each aspect group are derived. The proposed method is demonstrated with a few specific examples. The difference between the concept of a magnetic point group and the concept of a Heesch group is clarified.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung In der heute üblichen verallgemeinerten Form erscheint die Relaxation als Eigenschaft des Ansprechens linearer Systeme. Die Annahme kausaler Ereignisfolge, nämlich, daß das Ansprechen — als Wirkung — der Störung — als Ursache —folgen muß, genügt für die Ableitung einer einheitlichen Relaxationstheorie. Die Ableitung der Theorie, die hier gegeben wird, beruht auf einer funktionentheoretischen Diskussion. Der Anschaulichkeit halber wird diese Diskussion an Hand eines Beispiels, nämlich der elastischen Relaxationserscheinungen, aber in allgemeiner Form durchgeführt. Bedingungen für das Auftreten diskreter und kontinuierlicher Relaxationsspektren werden erhalten, sowie Aussagen über die Verteilungsfunktion.

    Notes: A method is presented for determining the diffusivity of a gas in a polymer from the response to a step concentration change in a continuous-flow permeation chamber. The outlined procedure has several advantages over techniques currently in use: it requires simple numerical integration rather than curve fitting; it utilizes the complete response, rather than a portion of the response which falls within the region of validity of a short-time asympotic solution of the diffusion equation; and it is applicable both to flat membranes and cylindrical tubes. An illustration of the method is provided by the measurement of the diffusivity of sulfur dioxide in a PTFE tube at several temperatures.
