Notes: Abstract A study on the effect of powder, spray and coating parameters on superconducting properties of plasma-sprayed Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x coatings has been carried out. Optimised spray parameters to yield strong, adherent and dense coatings on many substrates including AISI 304 SS and alumina have been obtained. Coatings show superconductivity after oxygen annealing at 950°C for an hour. Coatings thinner than 100 μm do not show zero resistivity down to 77 K due to weak links between granular superconductors. Coatings prepared with fine powder have superior superconducting properties, viz. higherT c andJ c values than coarse powder coatings. The choice of substrate material strongly affects theJ c values.

Notes: Abstract A series of Ni–Co ferrites with the general formula Ni1-x Co x Fe2O4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0) was prepared by a low-temperature hydroxide coprecipitation route. The catalyst systems were characterized by adopting various physico-chemical techniques. Alkylation of pyridine with methanol was carried out in a down-flow vapor-phase reactor. The influence of surface acid–base properties, cation distribution in the spinel lattice and various reaction parameters are discussed. It was observed that the systems possessing x values ≥0.5 are selective for 3-picoline formation, whereas the ones with x values 0 and 0.2 give a mixture of 2- and 3-picolines. Pyridine conversion increased with the progressive substitution of Ni2+ ions by Co2+ ions. Cation distribution in the spinel lattice influences their acidic and basic properties, and these factors have been adequately considered as helpful to evaluate the activity of the systems.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-four adult Indian elephants (Elephas maximus indicus) of both sexes and different ages and weights, belonging to the Temple Devaswoms, the Forest Department of the Government of Kerala and the Gemini Circus formed the experimental subjects from which formulae were derived to predict the total surface area from either body measurements or areas of individual regions. Several models, using the parameters studied either singly or in combination, were tried independently for males and females and also for adults irrespective of sex. The best prediction of total surface area (S) in m2 was obtained for adults irrespective of sex by using the two parameters, the height at the shoulders (H) in m and forefoot pad circumference (FFC) in m in the formula S=−8.245+6.807H+7.073FFC. No significant improvement in the accuracy of prediction resulted from the use of the independent best fit formulae for males and females. The conventional method of using the exponential of body weight (kg) for predicting suface area was not found to yield an equivalent accuracy in these animals.

Notes: Abstract Plasma-sprayed TiB2 coatings (50–600 μm thick) on alumina substrates have been developed and characterized. X-ray diffraction studies, thermal analysis and oxygen analysis of the coatings show that there is appreciable oxidation of TiB2 during the spray process. Partial oxidation of the boride during spraying strongly influences the electrical conductivity of the coatings, which is found to be 100–1000 times less than that of pure TiB2. Although use of argon as shield gas during the spray process brings down the resisitivity substantially, partial oxidation of TiB2 could not be totally avoided.

Notes: Abstract The electron donating properties of manganese ferrospinels of various compositions (MnFe2O4, Mn1.2Fe1.8O4, Mn2FeO4 and Mn2.5Fe0.5O4) were studied from the adsorption of electron acceptors of various electron affinity values from acetonitrile as solvent. The limit of electron transfer from the oxide surface is from 1.77 to 2.40 eV in terms of the electron affinity of the electron acceptor. The data have been correlated with the catalytic activity of these oxides towards autoxidation of sulfites. Both weak and strong electron donor sites catalyze the reaction.

Notes: Abstract A comparative account of the tin-samarium binary oxide and its sulfate modified analogue (SO4 2- / SnO2-Sm2O3) in the alkylation of phenol with methanol is reported. Sulfate modification resulted in a large variation in product selectivity and reaction pathway due to the creation of strong acid sites, which alters the nature of adsorption of phenol on the catalyst surface.

Notes: Abstract Cosmid pHU52, which carrieshup genes ofBradyrhizobium japonicum, has been integrated into theCicer-Rhizobium G36-84 genome via Tn5-mediated homologous recombination. Tn5 was inserted into both the cosmid pHU52 and the chromosome ofCicer-Rhizobium to provide a region of DNA homology, without affecting the expression of necessary genes. An incompatible plasmid, pPH1JI, was used to select those few cells that had undergone recombination. The integration of the cosmid was demonstrated by Southern blot analysis. Chromosomal integration of thehup genes maximized stability and minimized the potential for their horizontal transfer to other bacterial species. The integratedhup genes were found to expressex planta as well in nodules. The method described illustrates how a given gene can be stably integrated into the chromosome.

Notes: Abstract The competitive ability of eight strains ofBradyrhizobium on Vigna was examined. It was found that strains S24, M10, and M11 occupied a greater percent of nodules when introduced as mixed inoculum of two strains. Growth rate of strains did not affect competitive ability of the strains. Two hydrogen-uptake positive (Hup+) strains, S24 and M10, were found to be good competitors while another Hup+ strain GR4 was not so. Influence of the host in competition was observed in the case of strain GR4.
