Notes: The survival rate and the reasons for failures of 130 combined fixed–removable reconstructions (CFR), incorporated in 112 patients, were assessed. Each CFR reconstruction was classified depending on its attachments: 76 reconstructions were attached with rigid, precise attachments, and constituted the rigid group; 54 reconstructions were attached with either semi-precision or individual attachments and were defined as the semi-rigid group. Of the 130 reconstructions, 41 were determined as complete successes, 39 as partial successes and 50 as failures, leading to 37 major repairs and to 13 new reconstructions. Three reconstructions failed due to technical reasons, 36 due to biological reasons and for 11 reconstructions, both categories of reasons were responsible for their failure. In total, technical reasons were counted 15 times in comparison to 73 biological reasons for those 50 failed reconstruction, with 29 fractured abutment teeth as the most common biological reason. Within the rigid group, 45 failed reconstructions were observed, whereas within the semi rigid group only 5 failures occurred, leading to an 8-year survival estimate (± SD) of 30·1% (± 6·9%) for the rigid group and 93·1% (± 3·9%) for the semi rigid group. Beside the attachment type, the anatomy of the partially edentulous tooth arch in form of the free-end situation and the dentate opposing jaw were identified as risk factors.

Notes: Abstract In shallow water off the north coast of Sardinia (western Mediterranean) the frequency of occurrence of the starfishAstropecten aranciacus was recorded in 70 sample areas of 25 m2 each. Four environmental factors, namely depth, average sand grain diameter, number of mollusc species, and number of individuals of the genusEchinocardium proved to be related to the abundance ofA. aranciacus. The sediment contained many species, each, as a rule, being present at low abundance. The molluscs found and their sizes are listed.

Notes: Abstract On acid low-phosphorus (P) Colombian Oxisols, improved pastures with acid-soil-tolerant grass and legume varieties have increased beef production by a factor of 10 to 15 with only modest P fertilizer inputs. This indicates that the efficiency of P fertilization could be greater than is commonly expected on such strongly P-sorbing soils. To understand the effect of improved pastures on P cycling and availability, we estimated P budgets, and characterized soil P by sequential fractionation, isotopic exchange and biological activity measurements on soil samples from unfertilized native savanna, and fertilized improved grass-only (Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk) and grass-legume (B. decumbens + Pueraria phaseoloides, Kudzu) pastures established in 1978 on a medium-textured isohyperthermic, tropeptic haplustox. Comparison of calculated P budgets, based on inputs and exports, with total soil P contents showed that fertilization, as part of the improved pasture management, had resulted in a measurable increase of total P in the surface 0–20 cm soil layer of nearly 30 mg kg-1 or about 20% over the savanna level. Sequential soil P fractionation of different seasonal samplings indicated that grass-legume maintained higher organic and available inorganic P levels with less temporal variation than the two other types. The linkage of organic P and available P was also reflected in soil biological activity. Estimates of P in microbial biomass and phosphatase activity were significantly higher in grass-legume than grass-only and savanna. The improvement in soil P availability, as measured by solution P concentration, P sorption and exchangeable P, was much greater in grass-legume than in grass-only. With comparable fertilizer inputs and greater product exports, improved P availability in grass-legume cannot be due to differences in budgets but can be attributed to changes in the overall biological activity in the soil-plant system caused by the presence of legumes in the vegetation cover. Total C, organic P content and macrofaunal activity were all significantly higher in grass-legume soils. Greater turnover of organic litter in grass-legume may provide for steadier organic P inputs and, therefore, higher P cycling and availability.

Notes: Abstract Arianta arbustorum is a highly variable helieid snail found in Europe. We have studied biometrically its transition from low altitude where large dark phenotypes are typical, to higher altitudes in the Alps, where small light ones are found. Seven measurements and 10 colour characters were considered. Size varies with altitude while colours rather vary with habitats. Our observations on 5 alpine transects agree with those of previous authors who sampled other alpine areas. It indicates that the species' reaction to alpine conditions is general to large mountain regions. This provides a striking example of consistent variation. Previous authors claim that midland and alpine Arianta stem from different colonizing stocks. However, part of the variation found in the present study appears to be adaptive. Both interpretations can be reconciled.
