    Notes: The electron microscopic investigation of the m. sphincter pupillae of adult black hooded rats showed the presence of melanosomes in the smooth muscle cells. In shape and size the melanosomes were like those of the iridial epithelium. In addition, premelanosomes and tyrosinase activity were observed as well as melanosomes with disintegrated content and acid phosphatase activity. The data suggest that the smooth muscle cells of the m. sphincter pupillae are capable of the formation and degradation of melanosomes.

    Notes: Electron-microscopic study of the size of the melanosomes, the mean percentage of melanosomal profile area (MPMA) of the cells, and the duration of melanogenesis in the pigmented layers of the rat's eye (inbred strain BDE/Han) revealed the following: 1) The melanosomes in the cells of the retina vary in size and shape in different locations of the eye. The MPMA of the cells also differs. Only in the two layers of the iris epithelium do the minor diameters of the melanosomes not differ significantly from each other, but the MPMA of the cells is different. The pigmented outer layer of the ciliary epithelium stands out on account of its especially large, round melanosomes. 2) The melanosomes of the uveal melanocytes are uniformly small but exhibit the largest MPMA. 3) Only in the pigment epithelium of the fundus does melanogenesis cease in the fifth week of life. As a result the MPMA decreases. In the other areas of the pigmented epithelium and the uvea tyrosinase activity and premelanosomes are present from the new-born to the adult animal. These signs indicate continued melanogenesis. 4) Compound melanosomes are present in all pigmented locations of the eye. Giant melanosomes occur regularly only in the outer layer of the retina.

    Notes: Summary As a result of an electron microscopic investigation of the hair root, a normally structured desmosome was found in a cortical cell. The desmosome spanned an invagination of the plasmalemma. A disturbance of the perception apparatus of the cell membrane is supposed as the cause for the fault of the cell.

    Notes: Summary Pigment cells of human red hair (pheomelanocytes) are never connected to keratinocytes by desmosomes or other defined cell junctions. In the dendritic processes of pheomelanocytes, thin filaments, about 50–80 Å in diameter, and microtubuli can be observed. Early prepheomelanosomes contain loosely arranged filaments. With the onset of pheomelanogenesis dense material is deposited on the filaments. Distinction between late prepheomelanosomes and pheomelanosomes is not clearly possible, because of the disorganized appearance of the content. Furthermore, the content of pheomelanosomes sometimes seems to be disintegrated. By means of the DOPA reaction, tyrosinase activity is shown to be present in: a) prepheomelanosomes, b) large cisternae apposed at one side of dictyosomes, c) small cisternae of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and d) coated and uncoated vesicles. The results suggest that red pigment granules are formed in a manner similar to that of melanin granules. It is further assumed that an inadequate stability of pheomelanoprotein accounts for the inability of red-haired people to develop effective protection against ultraviolet light.

    Notes: Summary Osteoblasts in the diaphysis of the tibia during endochondral ossification in young rats are attached to one another by nexus, by “adhaerens” junctions, and by simple appositions. “Adhaerens” junctions and nexus also occur between preosteoblasts and osteoblasts. Furthermore, the osteoblasts exhibit a network of microfilament bundles in the cell periphery overlying the osteoid. From this network bundles extend into the cell processes which protrude into the unmineralized matrix. The mean diameter of individual microfilaments is 5.9±0.06 nm. A possible role of nexus and microfilaments in controlled bone growth and differentitation is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Electron-dense deposits were found along the inner side of the cell membrane of chicken erythrocytes when fixed in a CaCl2-containing glutaraldehyde solution. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts were studied in an attempt to determine whether the deposits are related to calcium metabolism. No electron-dense deposits adjacent to the cell membrane were found in either these cells or in rat erythrocytes. Therefore, it is assumed that the deposits are not calcium-binding protein necessary for the cellular calcium uptake.
