Notes:
Abstract The radiant exchange within a diffuse/specular reflective spherical cavity containing a gray medium is analyzed for incoming diffuse radiation entering the cavity through a circular opening. The heat flux distribution is uniform for an optically thin medium and for low values of surface absorptance due to the large number of internal reflections. As the medium becomes optically thicker, the local heat flux increases monotonically as we approach the cavity opening. Under optically thin conditions, the apparent absorptance usually exceeds the surface absorptance, but can assume lower values as we increase in optical thickness and in cavity opening size. The difference between specular and diffuse reflection results decreases as the optical thickness is increased because radiation transfer within the medium becomes less dependent on the directional properties of the cavity walls.
