Notes: Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was used to estimate the compositional disordering induced by Ga focused-ion-beam implantation in a series of strained InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells (QW). A simple formalism was derived to estimate the indium concentration and the degree of interdiffusion of the QWs from the observed shifts in PL transition energies. A study of nanostructures indicated that the lateral extent of compositional disordering was significantly larger than predicted from the lateral spreading of the ion beam.

Notes: Summary.— Unusual mottled pigmentation present since birth in a girl aged 16 is described. Its pattern seems to differ from any previously reported. Through 3 generations in the direct ascending line generalized lentiginosis has been present. The hereditary background of pigmentary changes in the girl is discussed.

Notes: Summary A slow-growing, non invasive tumour of the skull situated at the inner side of the left temporal region, was found in a patient with mild ipsilateral facial hemiatrophy, marked contralateral hemiatrophy of the body and the extremities, and atrophoderma of Pasini and Pierini predominantly located on the same side of the body and the extremities. In addition, “essential teleangiectasia” and lichen sclerosus were found mainly within the atrophodermic plaques. On the basis of the circumstantial evidence it is suggested that the neurologic state caused by the skull tumour played an important role in the origin of hemiatrophy, primary atrophoderma and essential teleangiectasia. Lichen sclerosus is considered to be closely related to atrophoderma.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Patienten (insgesamt 4), zwei Brüder, mit »The diffuse and macular atrophic dermatosis» wurden beobachtet.
Notes: Summary Two brothers with the “diffuse and macular atrophic dermatosis” making a total of 4 patients are reported. The familial occurrence, numerous large “peau citréine” plaques situated on the dorsum of the upper trunk and congenital phimosis with superficial atrophy of glans penis, represent the additional features reported. The light and electron microscopic findings of the least affected site on the arm, of a “peau citréine” and of an erythemoscleroatrophic plaque, none previously studied, have been reported. Among other items, it was also found that the elastic stain-positive globe-like structures found in an unusually large number throughout the edematous upper dermis represent more advancely transformed “Civatte bodies” containing epidermal filamentous cell material.

Notes: Abstract Samples of an Fe-6 at.% Al alloy were implanted with doses of 5×1016−3×1017 Al+ ions/cm2 at 100 kV, and subsequently oxidized at 1173 K in O2 gas at 27 kPa. By comparison with the behavior of unimplanted specimens, no effect on oxidation was observed if the dose of implant was less than 1×1017 Al+ ions/cm2. At doses of 1×1017 Al+ ions/cm2 or higher, a change in the oxide scaling morphology was effected from a duplex α-Fe2O3-α-Al2O3 scale to an α-Al2O3-enriched film with a dispersion of α-Fe2O3 nodules. Oxygen uptake by the high-dose samples was due principally to nodule formation and weight gains after 45 hr were lower by 50–70% as compared with the unimplanted material. Nucleation and growth of the nodules occurred only within the first 5 hr of reaction, but their presence acted as an upper limit on the benefits provided by implantation of aluminum. Nodule formation was shown to be characteristic of the oxidation properties of the alloy material, not an extraneous feature introduced by the implantation process itself. Surface preparation prior to implantation had little effect on oxidation: high-dose electropolished samples behaved similarly to mechanically polished samples when implanted to comparable doses.
