Notes: Abstract— The concentrations of several metabolites, including glucose, glycogen, hexose phosphates, adenine nucleotides, amino acids and some tricarboxylic cycle intermediates were estimated in cerebral tissue of rats killed at various stages of pentamethylenetetrazole convulsions. Prior to and during the seizure there was an increase in glycolytic flux and depletion of energy reserves. An accumulation of alanine concomitant with a decreased citrate level observed before the convulsion indicated that a possible interference of pyruvate entry into the tricarboxylic cycle had occurred. At the tonic extensor phase of the seizure and during post-convulsive sedation a small but significant rise in GABA and an attempt to restore some of the labile constituents to more normal values was apparent. The significance of these results in relation to cerebral metabolic control and possible mechanisms of initiation and arrest of the seizure is discussed.

Notes: We have measured the specific heat of a Speer carbon resistor in the temperature range 0.32 to 4 K and in 0, 1.2, 6, and 12 T magnetic fields. Our zero field data disagree by an order of magnitude with previously reported results; the specific heat is also field sensitive. Where a piece of Speer resistor forms part of the addenda of a small-mass specific heat platform, lack of proper accounting for its addenda contribution can lead to large errors in the specific heat measurements, particularly in field.

Notes: We describe a computer based ac calorimetry technique for small samples (m〈100 mg) at low temperatures (T〈2 K) and in high magnetic fields (B≤20 T). We have found this technique suitable for relative calorimetry in noisy environments. Extension of this technique to absolute calorimetry is also discussed.

Notes: A total of 1023 women attending hospital antenatal clinics in West Glamorgan was surveyed by means of a self-administered questionnaire, to determine their attitudes to HIV testing in pregnancy. The response rate was 98%. Of the responders, 94% had no objection to their antenatal blood specimen being tested for HIV infection. Of the non-objectors, 55% wished their permission to be asked first, and 92% wished to be informed of the result, i.e. they wished for named testing. With regard to knowledge of other tests for infectious diseases performed on antenatal blood specimens, only 1·5% had totally correct knowledge, and only one in three knew that their blood was tested for syphilis. The implications of anonymous and named HIV testing are discussed, together with estimates of prevalence of HIV infection in women attending antental clinics, the rate of vertical transmission, and the prognosis for an infected baby.

Notes: Repeatability estimates applied to panel selection enable the experimenter to predict the proportion of judges whose sensitivity can satisfy established specifications. Repeatability estimates of different test designs indicated paired comparison to be more sensitive than the 3-sample binomial design. Studies on sessions of extended length indicate that protracted testing may provide a more reliable basis of panel selection than short-period testing does.

Notes: Studies have shown that the dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae contain several serine proteases, two of which have been shown to be allergenic, and to include trypasin and chymotrypsin, corresponding to the groups III and VI mite allergens. However, mites also contain other serine proteases, and the data reported in this study show that an elastase-like enzyme is present in both species. This enzyme was differentiated from the other serine proteases, particularly chymotrypsin, on the basis of charge, substrate specificity, and inhibition by copper and mercury cations. Its apparent mol. mass, as judged by gel filtration, was similar to those previously described for trypsain and chymotrypsin, i.e., 30 kDa. Several isoforms were detected by isoelectric focusing, but the isoelectric points of the major forms in both D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae were 10.5 and 9.8, respectively, contrasting with the acidic mite chymotrypsins. All three serine proteases were detected in whole mite and faecally enriched extracts, but the activities of trypsin and the elastase-like enzyme were greater in the latter type of extract. These data were similar to those obtained by quantitative immunochemical analysis of the D. farinae group III allergen in appropriate extracts, suggesting that culture conditions may modulate protease production. A monoclonal antibody affinity matrix specific for the group III allergen from D. farinae was shown to bind mite trypsin. However, a small amount of mite chymotrypsin also bound, suggesting limited immunologic cross-reactivity, a finding consistent with known sequence data.

Notes: Of the three known high effective mass ("heavy fermion'') superconductors, UPt3 has quite different properties from the rather similar CeCu2Si2 and UBe13. In particular, UPt3 has a much different temperature dependence of its resistivity below 300 K, a much lower initial slope of the superconducting critical field, H'c2(Tc), a much greater dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, on lattice perfection (proportional to resistivity ratio), and a much different temperature dependence of the low temperature normal state specific heat, Cn. This temperature dependence of Cn in fact includes a T3 ln T term for UPt3, compared to approximately a T−2 dependence for UBe13 and CeCu2Si2 at low temperatures. The presence of a T3 ln T term in Cn for UPt3, coupled with the extreme dependence of Tc on lattice perfection, has led to speculation that the pairing of the superconducting electrons in UPt3 may not be between opposite spins, but between parallel spins, i.e., p-wave instead of s-wave pairing. Recently, further experimental and theoretical evidence has been found supporting this speculation that UPt3 may be a p-wave superconductor. The present work surveys the properties of UPt3, including new results on the spin fluctuation behavior in the normal state of UPt3.
