    Notes: Abstract A novel real-time scheduler was developed to implement an interactive user interface for an existing state-of-the-art, hand-held blood analyzer. A software-timer-based scheduler was designed and implemented and guaranteed schedulability analysis performed to ensure that all hard execution deadlines could be met at run time. An execution bandwidth preservation mechanism that increases the robustness and predictability of the scheduler is presented. The paper is a case study that describes the design and development process from a point of view that emphasizes the importance of the systems integration issues that were encountered.

    Notes: Abstract Owing to the fast growing need for better means of building real-time systems, a number of representative languages used in real-time programming is surveyed. The evaluation focuses on seven languages which possess explicit real-time features. Based on a categorization of the latter, the seven languages are then compared with respect to their real-time capabilities. The strong points and the limitations of Ada and PEARL, the only high-level real-time languages readily applicable in industrial control environments, are covered in more detail. The evaluation reveals that none of the languages actually used in industry is genuinely real-time. Therefore, a number of new features is suggested for incorporation into existing or future languages and their run-time environments. These proposals are meant to advance the inadequate state of affairs, and also to reignite the discussion of this topic in the real-time community.

    Notes: Abstract We present polynomial-time static semantics-preserving transformations of real-time programs. Used in conjunction with schedulability analysis, the transformations significantly increase the class of real-time programs that may be analyzed efficiently for guaranteed schedulability at compile-time. In cases where the form of resource contention among processes resists efficient transformation, we apply a heuristic transformation (and a consequent run-time scheduling heuristic) to allow the programs to be analyzed efficiently.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a general model for pre-run-time scheduling of distributed real-time systems that are composed of abstract data types (definable in languages such as Ada, Clu and Modula-2) and abstract data objects (which can be defined in C++, Eiffel and RT Euclid). An architecture model, a programming paradigm, and execution and communication paradigms form the basis for this general model. The model includesabsolute timing constraints to represent periodicity and deadlines,relative timing constraints to model several kinds of timed precedence relations and synchronization requirements,independency constraints to capture non-determinism of conditionals and repetitions, andconsistency constraints to enforce consistent use of resources. In this paper, the model is formalized to obtain a mathematical foundation on which assignment (Verhoosel et al. 1993a, Welch 1992, Welch et al. 1993) and pre-run-time scheduling problems (Verhoosel et al. 1991, Verhoosel 1992, 1993a, 1993c) are defined. Additionally, the model is extended to allow exploitation of parallelism from programs, a technique that can be used during assignment and scheduling for meeting timing constraints.

    Notes: Abstract Typical in modern complex real-time applications are (1) integration of lar ge systems, as well as development of new systems and subsystems, (2) complex, often conflicting, functional and non-functional objectives, and (3) a significant degree of distribution and parallelism. The article takes a particular approach to viewing such applications, and describing them in a new language, called CaRT-Spec. While CaRT-Spec addresses many complex application objectives, the focus of our presentation is on functionality and timeliness, i.e. schedulability.
