Notes: South American high-mountain ecosystems are greatly influenced by human disturbance. In the mountains of Córdoba, Argentina, Polylepis australis (Rosaceae) woodlands are currently highly fragmented and subject to extensive burning and livestock grazing, resulting in severe changes of habitat characteristics, which hamper natural regeneration. In order to find out how to achieve successful reforestation, we compared P. australis seedling survival and growth and the development of a shrubby habit for two seed provenances and different planting microsites. Survival of planted seedlings after 5 years was 70%, with most deaths (19%) in the first year and declining mortality with ongoing establishment. Survival did not show any relationship with seed provenance or microsite characteristics. Height growth averaged 34.6 ± 1.2 cm in 5 years. Seedlings produced from seeds collected in a well-preserved woodland grew taller and showed a higher tendency for development of shrubby habit than those produced from seeds collected in a degraded woodland. Seedlings planted in more degraded microsites with exposed soil or rock due to past grazing pressure grew less and developed a more shrubby habit than those planted in better preserved microsites. Our results show that restoration of degraded areas with P. australis is possible and that there is potential to improve restoration success with a careful selection of seed provenance and planting microsites.

Notes: Bazex syndrome is a paraneoplastic dermatosis characterized by acral psoriasiform lesions associated with an underlying neoplasm. We present the case of a 64-year-old patient that was diagnosed with squamous cell lung carcinoma after being evaluated for lesions compatible with paraneoplastic acrokeratosis. With a high frequency Bazex syndrome is the earliest marker of an underlying subclinical neoplasm. An early suspicion is of the outmost importance in order to perform a prompt diagnosis of an underlying malignancy. We propose a diagnostic algorithm upon suspicion of acrokeratosis paraneoplastica and review the pathogenesis of this entity.

Notes: Abstract Resting and maximal mass-specific metabolic rates scale inversely with body mass. Small hummingbirds achieve the highest known mass-specific metabolic rates among vertebrate homeotherms. Maximal capacities for O2 and substrate delivery to muscle mitochondria, as well as mitochondrial oxidative capacities in these animals may be at the upper limits of what are structurally and functionally possible given the constraints inherent in vertebrate design. Such constraints on the evolutionary design of functional capacities may play an important role in determining the lower limits to vertebrate homeotherm size and the upper limits to mass-specific metabolic rate.

Notes: Abstract Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with probe pScT7, three different 5S rDNA loci were detected in the satellite of rye chromosome 1R (5SDna-R1) and in the short arms of chromosomes 3R (5SDna-R3) and 5R (5SDna-R2) respectively. All three loci showed polymorphism for the hybridization signal intensity. In order to determine the localization of these rye 5S rDNA multigene loci with higher precision within the corresponding chromosome arms, the probe pScT7 was physically mapped by FISH in relation to the following five translocations (Wageningen Tester Set): T850W (1RS/4RL), T248W (1RS/6RS), T273W (1RS/5RL), T305W (2RS/5RS) and T240W (3RS/5RL). Accurate physical maps of the translocation breakpoints had previously been made using electron microscope analysis of spread pachytene synaptonemal complexes of heterozygotes for the different translocations. The results indicate that locus 5SDna-R3 is located between the breakpoint of translocation T240W and the telomere, whereas locus 5SDna-R2 is located between the breakpoint of translocation T305W and the centromere, the hybridization of probe pScT7 on T305W translocated chromosomes demonstrating the complex nature of this translocation. On the other hand, the simultaneous detection of probes pScT7 and pTA71 (18S-5.8S-26S rDNA) with two different fluorochromes, indicated that the breakpoints of translocations T850W and T248W are located between loci Nor-R1 and 5SDna-R1.

Notes: Abstract Rainbow trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss, were exercise-trained for 18 hours per day over 28 days at water velocities up to 60% of their measured Ucrit. Anin situ perfused heart preparation was used to compare maximum cardiac performance between control and trained fish. Trained fish had a larger stroke volume at a given filling pressure, as well as an 18% higher cardiac output and a 25% greater maximum power output. These observations indicate that exercise training in rainbow trout improved maximum cardiac performance. Adrenaline produced positive inotropic and chronotropic effects on the perfused heart, but exercise training did not alter these stimulatory effects. Maximal activities of citrate synthase (CS), B-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (HOAD), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT) were measured in cardiac and skeletal muscles. CS, HOAD and GDH increased in red and white skeletal muscle as a result of training. Training also increased GDH activity in the endocardium and epicardium, and increased HOAD in the epicardium. While the training regime did not result in a statistically significant increase in Ucrit and produced a decrease in the condition factor of the fish, other training effects were clearly evident. Furthermore, significant correlations were observed between Ucrit and the maximal activities of GDH and HOAD.

Notes: Abstract We have analyzed the C-banding karyotypes, electrophoretic mobility of isozymes and seed proteins, total genomic DNA hybridization and chloroplast DNA ofAristavena setacea, Deschampsia cespitosa, D. media, Avenella flexuosa andA. stricta, which had been previously considered as belonging to the genusDeschampsia Beauv. s. l., in order to determine their taxonomic relationships. The results obtained with these different approaches indicate thatAvenella diverges substantially in all characters analyzed from the other two genera. No differences in six chloroplast DNA segments analyzed were found betweenAristavena andDeschampsia, which also show a level of total genomic DNA hybridization that indicates a relatively high proportion of common sequences. The closer relationship of these two genera contrasts with their divergence in karyotype structure that suggests a possible allopolyploid origin ofDeschampsia.
