Notes: [Auszug] Cotton plants (Karunganni 2, Gossypium arboreum) susceptible to Fusarium wilt were grown in pots containing 500 gm. of sterilized garden soil mixed with 10 per cent soil oat inoculum of Fusarium vasinfectum Atk. Visible symptoms of wilt were noted after ten days. The roots, shoots and leaves from ...

Notes: Cellulose II and cellulose I samples were treated respectively with a strong solution of sodium deuteroxide in D2O and a 99% solution of ethylenediamine. The complexes were washed with D2O and the nature of the OD bands were studied after rehydrogenating the sample. The infrared spectra of these rehydrogenated samples showed well-resolved OD bands which are resistant to reexchange. The Characteristic bands are discussed and compared with the predicted OH-OD frequency shifts.

Notes: Drawn nylon 6 filaments were subjected to swelling treatment with benzyl alcohol and aqueous solution of phenol and formic acid under slack condition and under tension. The pretreated samples were dyed with a disperse dye Foron Yellow SE-FL (C.I. Disperse Yellow 42). A considerable increase in the equilibrium dye uptake was observed as a result of swelling treatment. Studies on lateral order by X-ray methods showed that lateral order has increased considerably as a result of preswelling treatment. This apparent contradiction, viz., increase in lateral order and at the same time increase in dye upstake, is explained as due to increased void volume. Studies on mechanical properties showed that the percentage elongation is increased as a result of swelling treatment under slack condition in spite of increased lateral order. This is explained as due to the slippage of chain-folded crystallites.

Notes: Nylon 6 films were treated with solutions of phenol and iodine in D2O. After treatment the swelling agents were removed using D2O. The infrared spectra of samples before and after rehydrogenation showed well resolved ND bands resistant to rehydrogenation. The spectrum of samples treated with phenol showed ND bands characteristic of the highly crystalline α-form of nylon 6 and those treated with iodine in potassium iodide solution in D2O showed bands characteristic of the α-form. The band positions were correlated with the group configuration in typical crystal structures.

Notes: Cotton cellulose was subjected to repeated swelling treatment with aqueous solutions of ethylenediamine (EDA). Although EDA is capable of effecting a lattice change from cellulose I to cellulose II during successive swelling treatments, resistance to lattice transformation is offered during the first treatment in spite of the formation of cellulose-EDA complex. This is attributed to a structural hinderance existing in the cellulose molecule itself. There is considerable improvement in the lateral order of the treated cellulose on subjecting it to repeated swelling operations with EDA.
