Notizen: The absorption and fluorescence spectra and fluorescence decay kinetics of Cd1−x MnxF2 crystals with x=0.018, 0.063, 0.084, 0.26 were measured as a function of temperature under argon-ion and nitrogen laser excitation. In addition, laser-induced grating measurements were made as a function of write beam crossing angle for various temperatures between 15 and 50 K. It was found that a characteristic intrashell luminescence comes from two Mn subsystems, one composed of single Mn2+ ions and the second of Mn ion aggregates. Based upon the four-wave-mixing experiment, a relatively strong energy migration was found in each of these subsystems, but with a weak, if any, communication between them. The diffusion coefficients for both subsystems increase as the temperature is raised, and above 50 K strong diffusion erases the light-induced gratings beyond the possibility of detection. The long-lived components of the four-wave-mixing transient signals are associated with the other point defects, either created or photoexcited by the strong laser beams.

Notizen: It is shown that cadmium telluride exhibits second-harmonic generation under 1064 nm ps pulse excitation despite strong absorption of the green light which is generated. The process of second-harmonic generation contributes to the creation of an electron-hole plasma in CdTe which affects the measured value of the two-photon absorption coefficient and other nonlinear properties of the material.

Notizen: The frequency harmonic outputs of a Nd:YAG laser were used to excite Eu3+ ions in fluoride and oxide glasses with high-power, picosecond pulses. Time-resolved fluorescence spectra, fluorescence lifetimes, and rise times were measured on the fluoride glass to obtain information about the two-photon absorption transitions and the radiative and radiationless decay processes. The results show the importance of coherence in the intermediate state of the two-photon transition observed with 532.0-nm pumping. Multiphoton pumping with 345.7-nm excitation results in spectral shifts and lifetime changes which are attributed to local polarization effects. Similar experiments were performed on the oxide glass, and the results were found to be significantly different because of the more efficient radiationless decay processes in the oxide host compared to the fluoride host.

Notizen: Laser-induced transient gratings produced by two-photon absorption of picosecond pulses at 1.064 μm were used to examine the room-temperature nonlinear optical responses of CdTe crystals with different types of conductivity. Pulse-probe degenerate four-wave mixing measurements of grating dynamics on subnanosecond time scales were used to measure the ambipolar diffusion coefficient (Da) of charge carriers in the crystals. The value of Da =3.0 cm2 s−1 which was obtained is in very good agreement with theoretical estimates. A long-lived contribution to the signal consistent with a trapped charge photorefractive effect was observed at large grating spacings for n-type conductivity, and is tentatively attributed to a larger trap density in this sample. Measurements of the relative scattering efficiencies of successive diffracted orders in the Raman–Nath regime allowed for calculation of the laser-induced change in the index of refraction, due to the creation of free carriers. The value of Δn=4×10−4 which was obtained is in good agreement with theoretical estimates.

Notizen: Time-resolved spectroscopy measurements show that the excitation of terbium photoluminescence in thin film ZnS:Tb electroluminescent devices, due to energy transfer from donor-acceptor pairs, is independent of temperature. The differences in the decay kinetics of terbium ions excited in various ways demonstrate that terbium ions in different crystal sites have different excitation mechanisms.
