    Notizen: The predictions of the smooth-approximation theory for the effective radius of a space-charge dominated beam in a periodic solenoid focusing channel were checked experimentally over a wide range of focusing conditions. Electron beams with an energy of 5 keV and currents of 50 to 70 mA were transported through a 5-m-long periodic channel and beam radii were measured by an axially moveable phosphor screen and a charge-coupled device camera. The phase advance of betatron oscillation per period without space-charge, σ0, was varied from σ0=45° to σ0=90°. The tune depression due to space-charge, σ/σ0, was in the range of 0.2–0.3. The theoretical results for average beam radius R¯ over one period and the ratio R¯/Rmax were found to agree with the experimental data to better than 5% when a correction due to spherical aberration was taken into account.

    Notizen: A method for self-injection of background plasma electrons in a plasma wake field is introduced. In this scheme, a plasma wake wave, which can be generated by an intense laser pulse or an electron beam pulse propagating in a plasma, is passed through a sharply downward plasma density transition. When the plasma wake wave passes the density transition, some background plasma electrons are trapped by the ultrastrong plasma wake field that is several orders of magnitude stronger than the accelerating electric field in conventional rf-based accelerators. In this paper, the basic mechanism of the trapping is introduced and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation results including trapped-beam quality studies are presented. In addition, the experimental program to investigate the self-injection-based acceleration at the Center for Advanced Accelerators of KERI is introduced. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Localized longitudinal space-charge waves in a transport channel with a resistive wall are investigated experimentally. The space-charge waves with various pulse widths are generated in electron beams with energies of 3.0–8.5 keV and currents of 30–135 mA, and they are transported through a resistive channel with a resistance of 5–10 kΩ and a length of 1 m. The resistive channel, made of a glass tube with a resistive material coating, is surrounded by a long solenoid which provides the focusing for the beam. The localized space-charge waves are measured with current monitors and energy analyzers at the entrance and exit of the resistive channel, and the wave-amplitude growth and damping rates are determined. The measured results are compared with the theory in the long-wavelength range. For localized waves with short widths, where the long-wavelength approximation is not valid any more, dispersion and distributed capacitance effects on the growth/damping rates are discussed. In addition, preliminary results on the energy width measurements of space-charge waves are presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: In order to understand fuel vaporization and fuel–air mixing phenomena, methods for determining the concentration of fuel vapor and liquid are necessary. Previously, the vapor phase concentration was normally calculated from the absorption measurement. However, the absorption coefficient of vapor is a characteristic of the solute and depends on the wavelength of the excitation light, the solvent, and the temperature. Therefore it may require that each parameter be correctly determined, and the overall accuracy depends on the accuracy of separate parameters. In this study a direct measurement of the vapor pressure and temperature was conducted and those results were compared with the results from the absorption measurement. The method used in the direct pressure measurement is much closer to an estimate based on the Clausius–Clapeyron equation. Based on this argument, it is believed that the direct pressure measurement method is preferred for accurate measurement of the vapor phase concentration to apply to the quantitative analysis in fuel spray study. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The properties of solitary waves in space-charge dominated charged particle beams are investigated theoretically. Similarly to linear space-charge waves, both slow and fast solitary waves can exist. In a dissipative environment, e.g. a resistive-wall channel, it is shown that the slow space-charge solitary waves grow in amplitude, while the fast space-charge solitary waves decay. However, the growth and decay rates differ from those of the linear waves. A possible experiment with an electron beam is proposed to demonstrate these phenomena. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The characteristics of a pulsed plasma jet originating from an electrothermal capillary discharge are reported from optical emission spectroscopy as well as from laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurement. The results show that the plasma temperature and electron density jump across the Mach disk. Their values are approximately 25 000 and 14 000 K downstream and upstream of the Mach disk, and the corresponding electron densities are about 1018 and 1017 cm−3, respectively. By applying the LIF imaging method in the highly luminous underexpanded region of the plasma jet, a spatially well-resolved flow field was achieved. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Males of the common freshwater goby Rhinogobius brunneus, which provide paternal care, have a first dorsal fin (FDF) that is markedly longer and more elaborate in colour and shape than that of females. Females showed a clear preference for males with longer FDFs, but mated randomly with respect to male body size (Ls) and nest size. They were individually consistent in their choice of mates, and the strength of preference increased with inter-male differences in FDF length. During courtship, despite the unequivocal preference, females seem not to rely on FDF size in choosing a mate, but the leading display of males appears to play an important role in female choice. The results of this study suggest that intersexual selection probably contributes to the evolution of the elaborate FDF.
