    Notizen: Abstract Al2O3-ZrO2 (AZ) eutectic fibres containing 41.05 wt% ZrO2 and 2.03 wt% Y2O3 were produced via inviscid melt spinning (IMS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of the as-spun AZ fibre. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the phase transformations in this fibre. The XRD pattern of the as-spun AZ fibre showed tetragonal ZrO2, α-Al2O3, and non-equilibrium δ-Al2O3 phase formation. The DTA curve of the as-spun AZ fibre showed only one endothermic peak representing the phase transformation of δ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3. This phase transformation was confirmed by analysing the XRD pattern of heat-treated AZ fibre.

    Notizen: Abstract Inviscid melt-spun calcia–alumina (CA) fibre-reinforced aluminium 7075 alloy matrix composites were produced at 700 and 927°C by using a melt-infiltration method. Interfacial wetting and chemical reaction of the composites were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The composites processed at 700°C showed interfacial wetting and magnesium accumulation at the interfacial region. The composites processed at 927°C showed the formation of a 15 μm thick interphase region as well as excellent interfacial wetting. EDS analysis gave averaged compositions of this interface region at 63.5 at% Al and 31.5 at% Mg, which corresponds to the composition of spinel, MgAl2O4. The formation of spinel at the interface was confirmed by XRD analysis on the CA fibres separated from the composites.

    Notizen: Abstract The calcium aluminosilicate (CAS: anorthite) glass-ceramic matrix materials in the SiCf/CAS composites deformed in compression at a high temperature were analyzed for microstructures. The matrix region right above the top of the SiC fiber (θ ∼ 0°) showed high density of dislocations as well as twins. On the other hand, the matrix region remote from the top of the SiC fiber (θ ∼ 90°) showed only a twinned structure. This experimental result was compared with the Meyer et al.'s mechanical modeling indicating that the interfacial traction of the matrix region right on the top of the fiber is significantly high compared to the remote stress and thus it rate limits the creep deformation of the composite.

    Notizen: Abstract A kinetic analysis was performed on the spinel (MgAl2O4) formation reaction at the interfacial region of the calcium aluminate (CaO-Al2O3) fibre-reinforced aluminum 7075 alloy matrix composites (CA/Al 7075) processed at 1200°K. The counterdiffusion model of Mg2+ and Al3+ fluxes was employed for the spinel formation reaction. From the parabolic relation between the thickness of the spinel layer and time the reaction rate constant was determined to be a function of the average diffusion coefficient of Al3+ ions. By applying the parabolic equation to the experimental data of the CA/Al 7075 the average diffusion coefficient of Al3+ ions in the MgAl2O4 spinel at 1200°K was calculated and this value appeared to be in small deviation from the extrapolation of previous diffusion coefficient data.

    Notizen: Abstract In the ternary SrO-Al2O3-SiO2 system the pseudobinary join composition of 50 wt % SrO·SiO2–50 wt % SrO·Al2O3·2SiO2 (SS-SA2S) showed a glass melting temperature of ∼1500 °C and a crystallization peak temperature of ∼1100 °C. The (SS-SA2S) glass-ceramic pellets prepared by cold pressing and pressureless sintering, showed very low porosity. The (SS-SA2S) glass-ceramics containing B2O3 and those containing B2O3 and TiO2 revealed crystallization peak temperatures of ∼1000 °C and unexpectedly high porosity. By applying Kissinger analyses to the DTA data the activation energy values for crystallization of the three glass-ceramics were determined to range from 196 to 255 kJ/mol. The Ozawa analyses on the DTA data gave the Avrami parameter values at 3.69 to 3.95. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns from the three glass-ceramics revealed formation of the equilibrium crystalline phases of SrO·SiO2 and SrO·Al2O3·2SiO2 (monocelsian).

The composites processed at 700°C showed a good interfacial wetting and silicon accumulation at the interface. The composites processed at 927°C showed formation of an interphase region of about 10–20 μm thick, as well as excellent interfacial wetting. EDS analysis gave averaged compositions of this interphase region at 74 wt % Al and 26 wt % Si, which corresponds to the composition of mullite (3Al2O3 · 2SiO2). The formation of mullite at the interface was confirmed by XRD analysis.

    Notizen: Abstract Al2O3-MgO (AM) fibres containing 98.16 wt% Al2O3 and 1.84 wt% MgO, were produced via inviscid melt spinning. By using scanning electron microscopy it was found that the as-spun AM fibres were hollow and their surfaces were very rough. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-spun AM fibre showed δ-Al2O3 as a major phase and α-Al2O3 as a minor phase. The DTA curve of the as-spun AM fibre showed a single endothermic peak representing the phase transformation of δ-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3. This phase transformation was readily confirmed by analysing the X-ray diffraction pattern of heat-treated AM fibres.
