    Notes: Abstract Scattered-light photoelasticity, a nondestructive technique, is used to determine the stress distribution in a three-dimensional, solid-propellant rocket motor. The model is a case-bonded solid propellant with a stargrain internal boundary. Stresses are induced by internal pressure. The pressure load simulates part of the stresses developed in firing a rocket. The model material is polyurethane rubber which is similar to the binder material in actual rockets. The model construction and data analysis are discussed in detail, and the results are presented in graphical form.

    Notes: Abstract This technical note presents a technique for estabalshing the boundary retardation with respect to the observed finges. Thus, the available data are increased and, thereby, improve the accuracy of determining fringe spacing near boundaries and, in particular, in thin models. The technique is applicable to scattered-light polariscopes utilizing a quarter-wave plate to circularize the entering polarized light.

    Notes: Abstract A newly developed concept, called thescattered-light, rosette, is used to determine the state of stress on a free surface. Three simultaneous, polarized-light beams intersecting at a surface point yield sufficient scattered-light photoelastic data to evaluate the stresses at a surface point. After initial calibration, the surface-stress analysis consists of a series of photographs, one photograph for each point of interest. General equations are derived which are valid for any three light beams intersecting at a surface point on a stressed, photoelastic material. Simplifications of the general equations and techniques are also noted. Stresses obtained from the scattered-light-rosette analysis are compared with the known solutions for two problems.

    Notes: Abstract When a continuous or pulsed wave of ultrasound is scanned over an object, an echo emanating from the object may be detected. If the echo has a random variation in amplitude vs. position of the beam, the resulting variation is referred to as acoustical speckle. An analysis is presented for utilizing acoustical speckle to determine displacements on the surface or interior of an object. Two experimental configurations, pulse-echo and continuous wave scanning, are treated in the verification of the analysis.

    Notes: Abstract In some reactors, thin fuel plates are cooled by water flowing through thin channels on either side of the plates. There is a need to know the amount of deformation in the fuel plates due to the coolant flow so that failures can be avoided. A verifiable solution to this problem in the past has not been available. An experimental-analytical solution to this problem for design purposes has been developed and is herein presented.

    Notes: Abstract A set of equations is presented and the effect of rotation of the secondary principal stress axes is discussed. The equations, general and relatively simple, adequately describe observed results. In studying the equations, a better understanding of the rotational effect can be achieved, and a technique is suggested which can eliminate any error resulting from rotation. This technique and the concepts involved are substantiated with experimental evidence and reported in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract A technique involving sandwich-speckle interferometry has been investigated for application in making strain measurements on rotating structures. The technique has proven to be effective in relaxing stringent timing requirements for recording laser photographs and provides extended ranges of displacement measurement. Application of the technique to an experimental rotating specimen has demonstrated the potential of the method for making accurate strain measurements.

    Notes: Abstract A study of the combined use of laser-speckle and finite-element methods for stress analysis is described. The speckle technique provides displacement data which can be directly input to a finite-element computer program for the determination of stresses. The displacement data can be used as boundary conditions for the examination of a subregion of the structural component to be analyzed. A substantial reduction in computational effort can be realized over conventional finite-element analysis of the entire structure. Also, a sizeable reduction in the required amount of experimental data may occur since direct numerical differentiation of the data is not required for strain evaluation. Acceptable accuracy may be obtained even when experimental displacement data may be too scarce for traditional numerical differentiation. Random error in experimental displacement is illustrated to have localized effects on the calculated stress field.
