Notes: [Auszug] One way to investigate whether there is a failure in response to ?-ecdysone or a loss of its synthesis for X-linked recessive lethals is to produce gynanders containing patches of male (X/O) tissue in which the recessive lethal is hemizygous (hence potentially expressed) and female (X/X) tissue in ...

Notes: [Auszug] In eggs derived from flies homozygous for null alleles of the tor locus, all embryos fail to develop the most anterior and the most posterior regions of the larva (Fig. le). In the head, the labrum is not formed and the head skeleton is reduced in size. At the posterior, all elements posterior to ...

Notes: Summary The ‘discless’ mutations are zygotic lethals of Drosophila melanogaster with lethal phase at the larva/pupa boundary. They have been shown to identify genes whose functions are required for cell proliferation in the soma. We analysed mosaic females (generated by pole cell transplantation or by the dominant female sterile technique) with mutant germ line and normal soma and concluded that (1) the discless genes are required for the proliferation of the female germ line cells. (2) The discless genes are expressed during oogenesis and (3) as suggested by indirect evidence, the maternally provided gene products are necessary for cell proliferation in the embryo. It is suggested, that the same sets of genes control proliferation in the soma, germ line and-through the maternal effect-embryos in Drosophila.

Notes: Summary We have studied the developmental effects of two dominant suppressor mutations of position-effect variegation mutations on female germ-line cells. Su-var (2) 101, which has been shown to affect chromatin structure though altering histone deacetylation, and Su-var (3) 303are recessive female steriles and zygotic lethals in the presence of butyrate or an additional Y chromosome. We have analysed mosaic females with mutant germ-line and normal soma and concluded that intact functions of the Su-var (2) 1 and the Su-var (3) 3 genes are required for development of both the soma and the germ-line and that as indirect evidence suggest, their maternally provided products are needed for normal embryonic development. It is suggested that there is possibly a common control of chromatin structure and gene expression in the soma, female germ-line and embryonic cells of Drosophila.

Notes: Eight X-linked recessive female sterile mutations, derived from a hybrid dysgenic screen of Drosophila melanogaster and representing eight distinct loci, have been characterized by genetic and ultrastructural analysis. Four have abnormal respiratory appendages, three have essentially normal appendages but show moderate defects in the endochorion, and one mutant, fs(1)nela, exhibits major defects in both the endochorion and the respiratory appendages. Germ line clones of all eight mutants were generated using the dominant female sterile technique. Seven of the eight mutations are germ line specific, indicating that, although the eggshell is produced by the follicular cells, germ line functions play a significant role in its elaboration. The mutant that shows major defects, fs(1)nela, is somatic line specific, and exerts its effect in the ovary.
