Notes: Abstract Light-induced fluorescence decay was examined during the greening of control and lincomycintreated maize (Zea mays L.) leaves. Assuming that this decay to a first approximation is the result of two parallel first-order reactions, the fluorescence induction curves were linearized on the logarithm plot and the parameters were determined. The variable fluorescence increased, and the parameters of the two linear sections of the fluorescence decay—that is, the kinetics of the induction curves—changed during the greening of the control leaves. Lincomycin treatment caused some chlorophyll deficiency and the lowering of the chlorophyll a/b ratio, changed the fluorescence emission spectra and the effect of Mg2+ on the regulation of the excitation energy distribution. The structure of the thylakoids and the kinetics of the fluorescence decay were also changed in the treated leaves. The possible relationship between the change of the kinetics of the fluorescence decay and the change of spillover during greening and after lincomycin treatment is discussed.

Notes: The methodology of direct hair analysis by energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence was studied. The effect on the XRF result of having a non-homogeneous radial distribution of the analyte in a single hair strand and the macroscopic effects in a bundle of hairs were calculated to evaluate possible systematic errors. The detection limits were mapped as a function of the target thickness and surface fraction. It appeared that a 10 mg cm-2 sample thickness, i. e. a target with about four layers of hair strands, is recommended. The standard deviation of this simple direct analytical method is 6-19% for some important elements. Discrepancies with neutron activation analysis had a mean value of around 15%. About twelve elements can be determined simultaneously on a routine basis.

Notes: First results from a new program for chemical characterization of environmental particulates using synchrotron radiation are described. Trace element concentrations and chemical state determinations were made on fly ash samples from lignite-fired power stations. The experiments were based on the use of x-rays produced by an electron beam passing a bending magnet at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source. The high brilliance, energy tunability and almost complete polarization of the x-rays were used as the basis of a versatile X-ray microscope (XRM) at the X26 beam line. Mössbauer spectroscopy was employed as a complementary method for determination of the compounds in the iron-containing fly ash particles. The results demonstrate the practicality and strengths of using the synchrotron XRM for measurements of trace elements in fly ash particles and for the determination of oxidation states using x-ray absorption near-edge structure.
