Notes: Summary In order to obtain high impact polystyrene (PS), experiments have been performed on coupling of EPDM rubber and PS in the mixing chamber of a HAAKE plastograph. Lewis acids were added to the melt and the torque increase observed by their addition proved that chemical reactions take place in the system. During the reaction, the rubber proved to be more active, it became crosslinked and/or it was coupled with the PS molecules. Only a small fraction of the PS present coupled to the rubber molecules. No significant degradation process could be detected. Mechanical properties (tensile modulus and strength) improved during the reaction. This can be interpreted by the increased solubility of the coupled rubber molecules in the continuous PS phase.

Notes: Summary Cyclopentadienylation of PVC with alkaline (NaCPD, LiCPD) and acidic (Me2CPDAl) cyclopentadienylating agents has been investigated. In terms of product quality (absence of discoloration, gelation) Me2 CPDAl was found to be a superior cyclopentadienylating agent than NaCPD and LiCPD.

Notes: Summary The kinetics and mechanism of crosslinking and chain scission has been studied on several PVC samples during thermal thermooxidative, dynamic, and HCl catalyzed degradation. During pure thermal degradation crosslinking at a constant rate without scission occurs, while in the presence of oxygen and/or shear scission is not negligible. In the dynamic test, under shear both processes are fast, compared to static tests. The mechanism of benzene formation without main chain scission is discussed.

Notes: Summary Crosslinking and chain scission in thermooxidative PVC degradation have been studied. Gel formation was found to give linear Charlesby-Pinner plots, consistent with the constant rate of crosslinking and scission. Similarly to thermal degradation, partial reversibility of crosslinking was observed also in oxygen.

Notes: Summary The effect of HCl on the thermal degradation of PVC has been studied. Changes in UV and visible spectra and kinetics of HCl loss indicate that HCl is able to reinitiate the allyl-activated zip elimination by proton exchange with polyenes. Also polyene-consuming secondary reactions are accelerated by HCl.

Notes: Abstract Polychloroprenes CR containing pendant cyclopentadiene Cp functions have been synthesized by treating the rubbers with dimethylcyclopentadienyl-aluminum Me2 CpAl. Optimum reaction conditions have been determined. Cyclopentadienylated polychloroprenes CR-Cp gelled on drying, however, the products became soluble upon treatment with strong dienophiles, e.g., maleic anhydride or dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. Evidently gelation is due to Diels-Alder addition of pendant Cp groups and may lead to thermally reversible networks.

Notes: Summary The effect of N-nitroso compounds on free radical polymerization has been studied in the temperature range of 30–70 °C. The comparison with the effect of C-nitroso compounds shows that not only the inhibitor effectivity but the inhibition mechanism are different in the case of N-nitroso compounds. The detailed kinetic investigations proved that the thermal dissociation product of N-nitroso compounds can act as scavengers of macroradicals.

Notes: Summary Acid-base titration of poly/N-vinylpyrrolidone-co-maleic acid/ alternating copolymer was followed by densitometry in order to detect chain conformation transition found potentiometrically. Apparent molar volume (φ) values of the polymer were calculated for step-by-step titrated polymer samples. The effect of copolymer concentration on the conformational transition was also determined by measuring water diluted samples of each titration step. A continous increasing of φ was found in the case of KOH titrant, both in titration and in dilution. When NaOH was applied as a titrant, a very different φ profile was obtained. A minimum in φ vs. concentration occured in the vicinity of the half neutralization point of the dibasic polyacid.

Notes: Summary The degradation kinetics of PVC stabilized with barium and cadmium stearate has been studied in solution in inert atmosphere. Formation of HCl and metal chloride was followed along with the changes of UV and visible spectra. It has been shown that reaction between the stabilizer and labile chlorines originally present is insufficient to explain stabilization.

Notes: Summary Calculation method of confidence intervals for copolymerization reactivity ratios determined by the linear Kelen-Tüdős method is described, both for low and high conversions. The intervals as well as the confidence regions were compared with those obtained using non-linear estimation. No considerable deviations were found either in the parameter values or in their errors.
