Notes: The mechanisms of the formation of titanium silicide from the reaction of a single thin film of Ti on the silicon substrate with different degrees of substrate amorphization were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. With increased amorphization, an exothermic reaction prior to C49-TiSi2 formation was observed. X-ray diffraction discovered an unidentified phase together with Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si4 that disappeared with subsequent formation of C49-TiSi2 at temperatures above 650 °C. The difference in Gibbs free energy was considered in explaining the formation of Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si4. Based on the Scherrer equation, the resultant C49-TiSi2 grains with higher degrees of silicon substrate amorphization were smaller than those without silicon substrate amorphization. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: Polyunsaturated phosphatidyl choline is a preparation often advocated for diseases of the liver. Methods: In a randomized open controlled trial, a preparation of polyunsaturated phosphatidyl choline, at a dose of 900 mg orally daily, was given to 22 patients with acute viral hepatitis. A control group of 25 patients was not treated. Results: Serial serum bilirubin and alanine amino transferase levels were measured up to 12 weeks. The falls in their levels after 2 and 5 weeks, and the lengths of time to their normalization, were not significantly different in the treated group compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicated that polyunsaturated phosphatidyl choline had no beneficial effect on the course of acute viral hepatitis.

Notes: Background: Alpha-interferon has been found to inhibit hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication in Chinese patients with chronic HBV infection although a sustained effect was rarely achieved in those with normal pre-treatment serum alanine amino transferase (ALT) levels. Prednisolone priming has been found to be beneficial over treatment with interferon alone in these subjects. We studied the effect of steroid pre-treatment followed by recombinant interferon alpha-2a in the treatment of asymptomatic HBV carriers with positive hepatitis Be antigen (HBeAg), hepatitis B viral DNA (HBV-DNA) and minimal changes in liver histology. Methods: The treatment regimen included a 6-week prednisolone priming, a 2 week rest followed by 14 weeks of three times weekly 9 mega units of interferon alpha-2a injection and 52 weeks of follow-up. There were seven patients in the treatment group and seven controls. Results: The mean age, pre-treatment ALT (normal in all except for one in each of the treatment and control groups), HBV-DNA levels and histological scores were similar in the two groups. Serum HBV-DNA levels fell in six patients during treatment and became undetectable in two of them by the end. During follow-up, serum HBV-DNA returned to pre-treatment levels in all patients. None of the treated patients had HBeAg sero-conversion and none of the controls had spontaneous clearance of HBV-DNA or sero-conversion of HBeAg. No improvement of liver histology was observed in any of the treated patients. There were only mild flu-like side-effects noted and interferon alpha-2a was well tolerated at the doses given among treated patients. Conclusion: Prednisolone priming followed by interferon alpha-2a treatment has no beneficial effect on HBV carriers in the early stages of chronic hepatitis B infection.

Notes: Double-crystal X-ray diffraction rocking curves can be used to evaluate composition and thickness of epitaxic layers. In order to assess the limits of this technique, the 004 rocking curves of molecular-beam epitaxy- (MBE) grown coherent AlGaAs/GaAs epitaxic layers have been measured. The composition was calculated both by using theoretical values for the lattice parameters of the limiting compositions together with Vegard's law and also by using an epitaxic layer of AlAs as an in situ standard. The accuracy of this concentration measurement is evaluated by comparing it with an independent measurement of the composition. MBE-grown AlxGa1 − xAs (x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) epitaxic layers in the thickness range 0.2–6.0 μm were used to investigate the usefulness of the X-ray rocking-curve method for layer thickness measurement. The experimental rocking curves are compared with those generated from computer simulations based on X-ray dynamical scattering theory. In the thickness range 0.5–2.0 μm Bragg-geometry Pendellösung fringes are also observed. The layer thicknesses calculated from the integrated intensity ratios and the fringe spacings agree with layer thicknesses obtained from scanning electron microscope (SEM) sections. The applicability of this method to multiple layers is investigated using test structures.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a new frequency-dependent direct adaptive scheme for the optimal and/or suboptimal tracking of the motion of a prescribed model. The idea is based on a closed-loop control scheme in which an 2 H optimal/suboptimal controller is applied in parallel with a direct adaptive technique to guide a robot manipulator to follow a certain prescribed trajectory. The H 2 compensators have to be proper and positively bounded with respect to all dynamic frequencies. Robustness issues are addresses in the paper by lumping all the nonlinear dynamic terms such as the centrifugal and Coriolis effects as well as the mechanical and electrical friction forces of the robot arm, into a general unstructured uncertainty term.
