Notes: The northern Dabie terrane consists of a variety of metamorphic rocks with minor mafic-ultramafic blocks, and abundant Jurassic-Cretaceous granitic plutons. The metamorphic rocks include orthogneisses, amphibolite, migmatitic gneiss with minor granulite and metasediments; no eclogite or other high-pressure metamorphic rocks have been found. Granulites of various compositions occur either as lenses, blocks or layers within clinopyroxene-bearing amphibolite or gneiss. The palaeosomes of most migmatitic gneisses contain clinopyroxene; melanosomes and leucosomes are intimately intermingled, tightly folded and may have formed in situ. The granulites formed at about 800–830 °C and 10–14 kbar and display near-isothermal decompression P–T paths that may have resulted from crust thickened by collision. Plagioclase-amphibole coronae around garnets and matrix PI + Hbl assemblages from mafic and ultramafic granulites formed at about 750–800 °C. Partial replacement of clinopyroxene by amphibole in gneiss marks amphibolite facies retrograde metamorphism. Amphibolite facies orthogneisses and interlayered amphibolites formed at 680–750 °C and c. 6 kbar. Formation of oligoclase + orthoclase antiperthite after plagioclase took place in migmatitic gneisses at T ≤ 490°C in response to a final stage of retrograde recrystallization. These P–T estimates indicate that the northern Dabie metamorphic granulite-amphibolite facies terrane formed in a metamorphic field gradient of 20–35 °C km-1 at intermediate to low pressures, and may represent the Sino-Korean hangingwall during Triassic subduction for formation of the ultrahigh- and high-P units to the south. Post-collisional intrusion of a mafic-ultramafic cumulate complex occurred due to breakoff of the subducting slab.

Notes: Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x films having smooth surfaces were successfully synthesized by a microwave plasma-enhanced pulsed laser deposition (PEPLD) process. Particulates that frequently occurred in films grown by the conventional PLD process were effectively eliminated. The films were epitaxial-like. The c-axis was perpendicular to the films' surface, the a and b axes were aligned in the films' plane, and the onset and zero of the transition temperature were at Tc=90 K and Tc0=86 K, respectively. Optical emission spectroscopy indicated that the presence of oxygen plasma not only reexcited the laser-induced species via the collision process, but also produced abundant atomic oxygen in PEPLD process. The surface reaction kinetics for the formation of the thin-film process was thus greatly enhanced, which substantially improved the thin-film quality. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The nature of the vapor produced by pulse surface heating of UO2 and several other materials was investigated using normal-mode laser pulses with peak power densities between 104 and 106 W/cm2. Maximum surface temperatures measured by optical pyrometry ranged from 1900 to 4200 K. At temperatures below ∼2400 K for UO2, the vapor pulse followed the Hertz–Langmiur vacuum vaporization theory. More energetic transients produced gasdynamic blowoffs accompanied by significant supersaturation in the expanding plume. Neutron activation analysis of the collected vapor indicated that the total quantity of liquid UO2 evaporated in the pulse followed the Hertz–Langmuir formula. However, mass spectrometric analysis of the emitted vapor showed large deviations in the quantity and waveform shape of the monomer species. These and other features of the blowoff were satisfactorily explained in terms of nucleation and growth of polymeric species. Although UO2 clusters were undetectable by the mass spectrometer, polymers of MgO and ZrO2 were observed.

Notes: Graves’ disease (GD) is a common, autoimmune disease involving the thyroid gland, and it has been previously suggested that pro-inflammatory cytokines are involved in the disease's pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to test whether the interleukin (IL)-6 gene promoter region, or tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α or IL-8 gene 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) polymorphisms could provide useful genetic markers for an individual's susceptibility to GD. A normal control group of 60 healthy people and 95 patients featuring GD were examined. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based restriction analysis was performed for the three gene polymorphisms using endonucleases BsrBI, NcoI and ApaLI, respectively. We found no significant difference between the frequencies of genotype and allelic variants for the IL-6 gene promoter (−572 G/C), the TNF-α gene promoter (−308 A/G) and the IL-8 gene 3′-UTR (2767 A/G) for GD patients and for normal controls. Cytokines are a large group of proteins that may elicit multiple effects upon immunological reactions. It still appears to be very worthwhile to continue to aggressively search for cytokine gene polymorphisms in order to predict the development of such disease.

Notes: Cocoabean callus cultures were established and grew satisfactorily on an agar medium for more than 2 yr. Cell suspension cultures were initiated from the callus. The fresh weight of cells increased over 20-fold in 14 days. The lipid content of callus and cells was 5.3 and 6.5%, respectively. The fatty acid composition of cocoa callus and cell suspension cultures resembled that of immature cocoabeans since they contained high amounts of linoleic acid. Stereospecific distribution of fatty acids in triglycerides from cocoa callus and cells was similar to that of ripe cocoabeans. Exogenous acetate and fatty acids were readily incorporated into lipids by cocoa cell suspension cultures. Exogenous stearic acid increased triglyceride content twofold but did not change fatty acid composition of triglycerides. Coconut water alone or in combination with sucrose also increased triglyceride content with a concomitant increase in oleic acid from 10% to 33% and a decrease in linoleic acid from 37% to 19%.

Notes: Because of the current interest in the potential physiological effects of trans fatty acids and a brief report that microwave cooking causes isomerization of unsaturated fatty acids, we examined the effects of microwave treatments on the fatty acid composition of several food lipids, i.e., chicken fat, beef tallow, bacon fat, rainbow trout, peanut oil, and potato lipids. The data indicate that microwave cooking per se does not change the fatty acid pattern of these lipids nor cause isomerization of the unsaturated fatty acids.
