Notes: Abstract: Monoclonal antibodies against myelin-associated glycoprotein were generated by fusing mouse myeloma cells with spleen lymphocytes from BALB/c mice immunized with human myelin-associated glycoprotein purified from CNS myelin. Three groups of antibodies were identified: IgG antibodies recognizing the polypeptide moiety and IgG and IgM antibodies recognizing the carbohydrate moiety of the intact molecule. Properties of these antibodies were examined with sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the immunostaining technique using human CNS and peripheral nerve myelin, and ganglioside fractions isolated from human brain and peripheral nerve, and with immunohistochemical staining of human peripheral nerves. Part of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells was stained with the antibodies against the carbohydrate moiety, but not with IgG antibodies recognizing the polypeptide moiety. Natural killer activity was partially reduced after treatment of human peripheral blood lymphocytes with an IgM antibody and complement in vitro. The possibility that anti-myelin-associated glycoprotein antibodies might play a role in the pathogenesis of demyelinating diseases through modification of natural killer activity is discussed.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the effects of the antiandrogen flutamide on the activity of tyrosine hydroxylase, the levels of its encoding mRNA, and catecholamine levels in the adrenal medulla of male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). Flutamide (30 mg/kg) was administered subcutaneously daily (between 9 and 15 weeks of age). The systolic blood pressure of flutamide-treated SHR rats was lower than that of control SHR. Epinephrine and norepinephrine levels, tyrosine hydroxylase activity, and the levels of encoding mRNA in the adrenal medulla were significantly lower in flutamide-treated SHR rats than in paired controls. Systolic blood pressure, epinephrine and norepinephrine levels, tyrosine hydroxylase activity, and encoding mRNA in the adrenal medulla of WKY rats showed no significant differences between flutamide-treated and control groups. These findings suggested that flutamide may have cardiovascular effects through alteration of the catecholamine synthetic pathway caused by removal of androgen receptor stimulation on the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase in the adrenal medulla of male SHR rats.

Notes: [Auszug] Until recently, biotechnology in Japan was mainly a matter of fermentation—in brewing and the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and organic chemicals. However, recent strides in molecular biology and molecular immunology make us confident that the technology will play a key role in production ...

Notes: Abstract In the systems R2O-WO3 (R=Li, Na, K), the glass-forming region was extended by use of the rapid quenching technique combining a thermal-image furnace with a twin roller. The infra-red spectra revealed that the Li2WO4 glass contains no condensed macro-anions but only discrete ions of Li+ and WO 4 2− . The glass transition temperature (T g) and the crystallization temperature (T c) were determined.T g is affected very slightly by the type of alkali cations, whereas it is decreased with increase in the alkali oxide content. More than oneT g was observed in Li2O-WO3 glasses, which is due to the formation of metastable phases. The conductivity of glasses containing the same amount of alkali oxide (of different types) increased with decrease in the radius of the alkali cation. Electrochromism was observed in the glasses with R=Li, Na; the electric field required for colouration is lower than that in WO3 films. The electro-colouration is due to HxWO3 formed in the glass matrix by the double injection of protons and electrons.

Notes: Abstract Rapid quenching was applied to the sodium tungsten bronzes, Na x WO3, of differentx values. The crystallization processes of the coloured flakes obtained were analysed by differential thermal analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. It was found that an “amorphous bronze” phase is present in the quenched Na0.71WO3, whereas quenched Na0.84WO3 was composed of tungsten crystal and Na2O-WO3 glass. This difference is explained by the following equilibrium present in the melt of Na x WO3: 3xNa2WO4+(6−4x)WO3+xW⇄6Na x WO3 This equilibrium is shifted to the right whenx is small (x〈0.7), while it is shifted to the left whenx is large (x〉0.8).

Notes: The radical polymerization of ethyl 4-methyl-3-oxo-4-pentenoate (EMAA) was investigated at 60°C in benzene and acetonitrile. In both solvents, the kinetic results disagreed with the conventional model of radical polymerization. A remarkable solvent effect on monomer reactivity ratio was observed for the copolymerization of EMAA and styrene. Regression analysis of the monomer reactivity ratio with the solvatochromic parameters gives a good linear relationship, taking into account polarity and hydrogen-bond donating acidity of the solvent as the major factors.

Notes: Summary The thermal conductivity was measured for vitreous sodium phosphates of a variety of compositions in the temperature range from 50° to 160°. The temperature coefficient of the thermal conductivity decreases with the increase ofR (Na2O/P2O5 mole ratio), and changes its sign from positive to negative at the value ofR near unity. In the composition range fromR=0.7 toR=1.4, where the thermal conductivity increases with the increase ofR, the composition dependence of thermal conductivity can be explained by the composition dependences of density and of compressibility. The residual water in the phosphates on the ultraphosphate side of composition seems to have some large effect on the thermal conductivity.
