Notes: Amorphous Si films of 4000 A(ring) were deposited using low-pressure chemical-vapor deposition and implanted with arsenic or boron at doses of 5×1013, 5×1014, and 5×1015 cm−2. These films were then rapid thermally annealed (RTA) using an Eaton Nova ROA-400 system at temperatures ranging from 900 to 1200 °C and dwell times ranging from 1 to 30 s. It was found that grain growth initiated very rapidly (less than 2 s at 1100 °C). Grain growth saturation (when grain size equals the film thickness) was reached in 5×1015 dose samples after a 1200 °C, 10-s RTA. The sheet resistance decreased with increasing RTA temperature and dwell time. Hall mobility increased with both RTA temperature and time. The temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was negative at low dose implants and became positive at higher dose implants. The lowest TCR was found in films implanted with medium dose. In general, 1200 °C/10-s RTA is an optimal condition for crystallization and annealing of the 5×1015 and 5×1014 cm−2 dose films while longer times are necessary for the 5×1013 cm−2 dose films.

Notes: Abstract The problem of monitoring trends for changes at unknown times is considered. Statistics which permit one to focus high power on a segment of the monitored period are studied. Numerical procedures are developed to compute the null distribution of these statistics.

Notes: Abstract The Sr/Ca ratios in molluscan shells in Singapore waters were measured using the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. Our results show that the Sr/Ca ratio varies greatly among different species. However, within the same species, this ratio is practically the same for samples collected from sites close together but varies significantly for samples from sites far apart. Furthermore, this study shows that whole shell analysis using the XRF technique is simple and quick and that its application to environmental monitoring seems feasible.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, regression models with error terms generated by lower order ARMA schemes are analyzed. Methods are discussed for estimating the parameters of the regression coefficients and the ARMA processes. The problem of detecting changes in the regression parameters is considered. A change-detection statistic proposed by MacNeill (1978) for regression problems is modified for application to ARMA processes. The effect of autocorrelated errors on this statistic is briefly discussed.

Notes: The calculation of relative x-ray fluorescence intensity for annular-source geometry by the Monte Carlo method is reported. The K x-ray fluorescence intensities for different specimen positions were measured and found to be in excellent agreement with the calculated values. The same method was used to obtain the distribution of excitation intensity across the specimen surface. The usefulness of the results of such a calculation is discussed.

Notes: 122 pieces of Chinese porcelains from K'ang Hsi to 1982 made in Ching-te Chen were analysed using energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence with a Cd-109 exciter. The Zn Kα/RB Kβ ratio was found to be less than about 0.12 ± 0.03 for all pieces made before World War II and greater than about 0.12 ± 0.03 for all pieces made after the War, making it possible to detect modern fake reproductions easily and nondestructively.

Notes: The relative efficiencies of four Si(Li) detectors from three different manufacturers were studied. The results show that such efficiencies depend not only on the shape and size of the detector's sensitive volume but also on the collimator assembly and centralized or off-centre mounting of the crystal within the cryostat. It is therefore necessary to calibrate the XRF spectrometer in the same geometric configuration which will be used for the intended application in elemental analysis; calculated model-dependent efficiencies can be very different from experimental efficiencies.
