Notes: Summary The deformation and stresses in a circular wood log resulting from an arbitrary radial moisture distribution are examined. In this paper the log is modeled as a layered cylinder, with each layer assumed to be linearly elastic, cylindrically orthotropic, and homogeneous. The general solution to the equations of elasticity for a representative layer is given; constants of integration in the solution are determined through application of appropriate continuity conditions at the layer interfaces. Numerical examples are presented for logs of Scots pine which illustrate the effect of nonuniform moisture content upon the displacement and stress distributions.

Notes: Summary Transient temperature, displacement, stress and electric field intensities in a finite circular piezothermoelastic disk undergoing axisymmetric surface heating are examined. Exact solutions to the equations of equilibrium and electrostatics are obtained using a potential function approach based upon two piezothermoelastic potential functions, three piezoelastic potential functions and a piezoelectric potential function. The disk under consideration is assumed to exhibit hexagonal material symmetry of class 6 mm. The initial temperature of the disk is zero; thereafter one face is subjected to linear heat transfer from an adjacent medium (Newton's law of cooling), while the temperature of the other face remains constant. Both faces are taken to be free of traction. The cylindrical boundary of the disk is thermally insulated, electrically charge-free, and constrained against radial deformation. Numerical results are obtained for the stress and the electric potential distributions in a cadmium selenide disk.

Notes: Summary The stresses in an orthotropic elastic semi-infinite strip subject to plane strain are investigated. Symmetrical distributions of surface tractions are prescribed on the sides of the strip, while along the end the boundary conditions are arbitrary. By using an integral transform method the problem is reduced to a singular integral equation. The dependence of the stress singularity and the stress-intensity factors on the orthotropic properties of the strip is investigated. Stress distributions over the strip end are evaluated numerically.

Notes: Summary The postbuckling behavior of antisymmetric angle-ply plates, resting on simple supports and subjected to a gradually increasing uniform temperature field is investigated. Stable equilibrium configurations are determined through a direct application of the principle of minimum potential energy. Since nonunique equilibrium states may exist, a method of incremental loading is employed to identify the particular state associated with a given thermal loading path. Numerical results for fiber-reinforced laminates illustrate the effects of ply orientation, number of layers and aspect ratio on the postbuckling behavior. The phenomena of secondary buckling is examined in detail.

Notes: Summary Following a brief review of the governing equations of classical thermoelasticity, several commonly used methods of solutions are discussed, and a survey is made of thermoelastic boundary value problems which appear in the literature. References are also given to investigations concerned with the prediction of effective thermo-elastic coefficients for composites, and to studies of the average and local thermal stresses in reinforced structures. Finally, a few recently developed continuum theories which take into account the microstructure of composite materials are cited.

Notes: Summary Two general solutions to the linear theory of micropolar thermoelasticity are presented; one representation involves deformation potentials, the other employs stress-functions. The two representations are used to analyze the thermal stresses and thermal couple stresses in the vicinity of a cavity and a rigid inclusion during uniform heat flow.

Notes: Summary The equations governing plane-stress behavior of a piezothermoelastic body, expressed in cylindrical coordinates, are presented. A solution technique based upon displacement and electric potential functions is developed, and application is made to the problem of a circular plate exposed to axisymmetric surface heating Numerical results obtained for the elastic displacement and stresses, and the electric displacements and electric potential are shown to be in good agreement with those found using a previously derived exact three-dimensional solution.

Notes: Summary The deformation of an anisotropic elastic slab containing a stress-free crack is investigated. Each face of the slab is subject to surface tractions which have an arbitrary variation in one direction. The problem is reduced to two sets of three simultaneous Fredholm equations which can be solved numerically. Numerical results are obtained for orthotropic slabs having various ratios of crack length to slab thickness.
