Notes: Aims:  Focal nodular hyperplasia-like lesions have rarely been described in cirrhotic livers. We describe five cases of such lesions. Methods and results:  Between 1998 and 2001, 146 liver transplants were performed at the Royal Free Hospital for cirrhosis of the liver. Nodular lesions identified in the livers removed at transplantation were defined histologically according to the International Working Party classification (Hepatology 1995; 22; 983). They were present in 63 of these livers, as follows: 36 dysplastic nodules, 121 macroregenerative nodules, and 71 hepatocellular carcinomas. In five patients, an additional 12 nodules (size range 4–23 mm, median 10.5 mm) showed histological features suggestive of focal nodular hyperplasia including mildly inflamed vascular fibrous septa, and ductular proliferation. Pre-transplantation imaging showed features suspicious for hepatocellular carcinoma, in three of these lesions (12, 23 and 23 mm diameter) from two different patients. These lesions were histologically indistinguishable from focal nodular hyperplasia occurring in non-cirrhotic livers, with fibrous scars and septa which contained vascular and ductular structures. Conclusions:  It is important to recognize that these lesions may occur in the context of cirrhosis and that they should be considered in the differential diagnosis with hepatocellular carcinoma, dysplastic nodules and macroregenerative nodules.

Notes: The assumptions in the Borie & Sparks [Acta Cryst. (1971). A27, 198–201] procedure for the separation of order- and displacement-dependent components of diffuse X-ray scattering from a binary system AB are examined with the use of the concentration deviation (spin-like) notation. The more limiting assumption, that the structure-factor ratio η = (mAfA + mBfB)/(fA−fB) is constant in reciprocal space, is shown to produce an incomplete separation for normal variations in η. A matrix-inversion method for completing the separation is suggested for those cases in which the approximate equality of the Debye–Waller factors (DWF) of the individual atomic species indicates that some terms of the scattering equation may be neglected. The extension suggested by Ramesh & Ramaseshan [Acta Cryst. (1971). A27, 569–572] that anomalous dispersion induced changes in η could be used to separate the atomic static displacement properties of the various atomic pairs is shown to require a change in η greater than the variation of η across the reciprocal-space volume. Some difficulties of obtaining such a change are pointed out.

Notes: Extension of the interpolation formulae of Dwiggins [Acta Cryst. (1975), A31, 146-148] for the rapid calculation of absorption corrections is shown to allow the equally rapid calculation of the mean path length, \bat T, required for extinction corrections. The coefficients required to set up the calculations are tabulated. They approximate \bat T to within 0.5% R at low 2θ and 2% R at θ = 90° for μR ≤ 2.5 and also provide the derivatives required to estimate μR by the least-squares analysis of powder diffraction profiles for μR 〉 1.

Notes: The cumulant expression for the diffuse intensity scattered from disordered crystals shows that the often observed anomalies in total diffuse scattering also extend to the total displacement scattering. Comparison of experimental data on displacement scattering with Debye-Waller factors for Cu3Au shows the anomaly to be due primarily to inaccurate extrapolation in the vicinity of fundamental reflections. It is suggested that Debye-Waller-factor measurements are a necessary adjunct to diffuse-scattering measurements if the errors incurred in extrapolation are to be reduced.

Notes: Abstract The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), with representation from North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and South America, was formed in 1992 to provide a forum for liaison between resuscitation organizations in the developed world. This consensus document on resuscitation extends previously published ILCOR advisory statements on resuscitation to address the unique and changing physiology of the newly born infant within the first few hours following birth and the techniques for providing advanced life support.

Notes: Abstract The α-phase of the Al−Mn−Si ternary system has been precipitated from four liquid solutions (2.8 wt% Mn−3.7 wt% Si, 4.5 wt% Mn−7 wt% Si, 7.7 wt% Mn−10 wt% Si and 8.7 wt% Mn−12.6 wt% Si) and equilibrated slightly over the melting point of the (secondary) solid solution. Quenching into water enabled the precipitates to be separated from the solid solution and the co-nodal tie-lines for the α-phase and liquid to be determined. The silicon content varied from 9.8 to 11.8 wt%, while the manganese content, 29.6±0.6 wt%, did not vary significantly. The lattice parameter of the cubic unit cell decreased from 1.267 6(2) nm to 1.265 10(4) nm with increasing silicon. Neutron powder diffraction showed silicon to constitute approximately 50% of atoms on the icosahedral aluminium sublattices and 70% of a six-fold aluminium site in the interstices between the almost spherical, 54-atom clusters. This decrease in unit cell volume is interpreted as evidence for substitution of the silicon atoms on the six-fold sublattice.

Notes: Abstract An electron microscopic study of the twinning and exsolution textures in one hydrothermal and two pegmatitic amazonites from southern Norway is reported. From observations of three types of interfaces: between twins, between domains twinned on different laws and between Na- and K-feldspar domains, perthitic textures involving low albite lenses up to 10 μm long in a twinned microcline matrix are shown to result from exsolution from the triclinic phase. Complex twinning on albite and pericline laws is suggested to be the result of strains induced by exsolution. Other textures, involving the late introduction of Na at low temperature in a pegmatite and the occurrence of Pb-rich and plagioclase crystallites in a hydrothermal amazonite, are described.
