    Notes: Abstract In summary, the relative toxicity of selected unsaturated alcohols were evaluated in the static Tetrahymena pyriformis population growth assay. The alkyn-1-ols were found to be more toxic than alken-1-ols. Moreover, 2-position unsaturated derivatives were more toxic than other isomers. A linear log Kow dependent relationship was generated (slope = 0.64; intercept = −0.61; r2 = 0.974) for selected 2-alkyn-1-ols. However, the diols were observed to be more toxic than predicted.

    Notes: Abstract Two batches of a reference material (RM) “total protein in human urine” were prepared for quality assurance in the determination of human urinary proteins. The material was prepared by freeze-drying of a pooled urine sample obtained from healthy volunteers. Protein concentrations in both batches were within physiological values, close to their upper limit. Interlaboratory comparisons conducted in 26 laboratories using the standard operation procedures elaborated for six of the most frequently employed methods (biuret, Bradford, Exton, Lowry, Pesce, and Watanabe) revealed that the results obtained by the individual methods were significantly different due to various reaction mechanisms involved. It was therefore necessary to certify the mean values and their uncertainties individually for each method. These operationally defined certified or information values are valid only when the prescribed standard operation procedures are strictly followed.

    Notes: Summary Administration of ethanol in several doses during human exposure to styrene can inhibit the urinary mandelic and phenylglyoxylic acid excretion in a way similar to that reported when ethanol was administered as a single dose. Sensitivity to this inhibitory effect has been found to differ with individual subjects. Differences in long-term consumption of ethanol resulting in different induction of the oxidizing enzymes are suggested to account for this finding. Intra-individual variation in the influence of acute ethanol ingestion on the excretion rate of the mentioned acids can also occur. The habit of drinking ethanol might be important, even for partial redirection of the styrene metabolism from styrene glycol oxidation to styrene glycol conjugation with β-glucuronic acid and/or sulfate. The consequences of these observations for the occupational hygiene practice are briefly outlined.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In der Rattengalle banden sich Mn2+-Kationen an Stoffe niedermolekularen Gewichts. Beim Vorhandensein von Mn2+ wurden Stoffe von noch niedrigerem Molekulargewicht gebildet. Man setzt voraus, daß es sich um Gallenpigmente handelte, die von ihren Trägern in der Galle durch den Einfluß von Mn2+ gelockert wurden. Die Veränderungen in der Gallezusammensetzung kamen sowohl inin vivo- als auchin vitro-Versuchen vor. Die gleichen Veränderungen beobachtete man inin vitro-Versuchen mit der menschlichen Galle.
    Notes: Abstract In rat bile, Mn2+ cations bound to substances of low molecular weight. Substances of still lower molecular weight were formed, in the presence of Mn2+. It is suggested that the substances in question were bile pigments loosened from their carriers in the bile under the influence of Mn2+. The changes in the bile composition occurred in bothin vivo andin vitro experiments. The same changes were observed inin vitro experiments with human bile.

    Description / Table of Contents: Poly(vinyltoluol-α-thiol)und Poly(1-methacryloyl-oxyäthan-2-thiol) werden durch polymeranaloge Hydrolyse der entsprechenden polymeren Isothiuroniumsalze hergestellt. Die Adsorption von Schwermetallen aus Lösungen niedriger Konzentrationen wurde für beide polymeren Thiole untersucht. Die Affinität steigt bei Experimenten in vitro in der Reihe Pb 〈 Ag 〈 Hg an. Bei Experimenten in vivo wurde die Resorption des Quecksilbers im Darmtrakt von Ratten durch das Methacrylatpolymere verhindert, wenn Quecksilberchlorid oder Methylquecksilberchlorid eingesetzt wurde, nicht aber im Falle von Phenylquecksilberchlorid.
    Notes: Poly(vinyltoluene-α-thiol) and poly(1-methacryloyloxyethane-2-thiol) were prepared by the polymeranalogous hydrolysis of the respective polymeric isothiuronium salts. The sorption of heavy metals from low-concentrated solutions was studied for both thiol polymers. Affinity increases in the series Pb 〈 Ag 〈 Hg in experiments in vitro. In vivo the mercury resorption in the gastrointestinal tract of rats was partly blocked by the methacrylate derivative if mercuric chloride or methylmercurichloride was administered (in the case of phenylmercurichloride the polymeric thiol was ineffective).
