Notes: A series unsaturated polyesters were made from 2,2-di-methyl-l,3-propanediol, propylene glycol, fumaric acid, and isophthalic acid by a two-step fusion process. The effect of catalyst, conversion, composition, unsaturation, and styrene content were studied, and the relationship between composition and properties was established.

Notes: Triblock copolymers of the ABA type were synthesized in which the A block is poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), having molecular weight of 1000 or 2000, and the B block is poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), having molecular weight of about 8000 or 10,000. When the triblock copolymer was cooled from the melt, the PEO block crystallized at around room temperature. Upon further cooling to liquid nitrogen temperature and reheating, the crystallization of the PDMS middle block took place at around -90°C. The melting temperatures and degrees of crystallinity of the PEO blocks in the copolymers were depressed from their respective pure state values. On the other hand, the melting points of the PDMS middle blocks in the copolymers were the same as the pure state values; furthermore, the degrees of crystallinity were unexpectedly much higher. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Unsaturated polyesters were prepared by one-stage melt condensation of maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, propylene glycol, and poly(ethylene glycol)s with different molecular weight, and the properties of their castings from styrenated resins were investigated. Tensile and flexural properties decrease with the increase of molecular weight of poly(ethylene glycol), but impact strength, elongation, and water absorption have an inverse effect. This study improves the understanding of the effect of chain length of poly(ethylene glycol) in unsaturated polyester on the properties of its castings.

Notes: The proton decoupled 13C NMR spectra of PVC polymerized at various temperatures were obtained using a 150-MHz NMR spectrometer. Chemical shift changes induced by a solvent effect were utilized to allow the detection of the six possible tetrads. Eight of ten possible pentads were also observed. The relative areas of tetrads and triads indicate that the polymerization of PVC above -20°C is Bernoullian.

Notes: Model p-cresol-formaldehyde condensates having regular sequences of methylene ether and methylene linkages were prepared by the self-condensation of dimethylol derivatives of p-cresol-formaldehyde condensates (2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-benzenedimethanol, 3,3′-methylene-bis[2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzenemethanol] and 3,3′-[(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-m-phenylene)dimethylene]-bis[2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzenemethanol]). 300-MHz 1H-NMR spectra of these polymers and of their acylated derivatives were recorded and used to develop resonance assignments for the various types of protons present in these polymers. The spectra were found to be sensitive to end-group and sequence distribution effects.
