Notes: Abstract Scanning electron microscope studies have shown that chromate paint pretreatment of aluminium resulted in the deposition of a film comprising layers of spherical-shaped particles. On alkali-etched substrates the particle size varied from between 60 nm to less than 10 nm. The larger particles tended to occur either in some of the larger pits on the surface or in the vicinity of intermetallic particles. Uniformly sized 50 to 60 nm particles were deposited on the surface of a polished substrate. Penetration of organic resins into the particulate surfaces may contribute towards the good paint and lacquer adhesion resulting from the pretreatment process.

Notes: ac-Phosphoric acid anodizing of aluminium results in the initial formation of a featureless barrier film on the metal surface, followed by nucleation and growth of a filament structure. The rate of filament growth and filament diameter are dependent upon the anodizing temperature. Static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SSIMS) and XPS indicate that organic contamination levels on all anodized surfaces are low regardless of anodizing temperature and that contaminant levels tend to decrease as anodizing proceeds. Apart from the very intense Al+ in the positive ion spectra and the O- and OH- peaks in the negative ion spectra, SSIMS spectra were characterized by the appearance of a series of peaks from AlxOyHz fragments. Appearance of AlO+ or AlOH+ clusters in the positive ion spectra depended on the anodizing conditions. Both XPS and SSIMS confirm the presence of phosphates on the anodized surfaces but differences in results from the two types of analyses imply that unknown factors affect the concentration present.Low contaminant levels, corrosion inhibition from surface phosphates and the filamented topography developed will all affect the adhesive properties of the surface.

Notes: A series of epoxide resins typically used in adhesive and coating applications have been characterized by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Using thin-film silver cationization, oligomers containing up to 16 bisphenol-A groups were detected for the epoxide-terminated diglycidyl polyethers of bisphenol-A and propan-s-ol that comprise the bulk resins. For the higher molecular weight resins, the results indicate the additional presence of monoglycol-, diglycol- and phenol-terminated oligomers. For thicker film specimens, the spectra exhibit signals characteristic of the terminal epoxide and the bisphenol-A components comprising the oligomer chains. Furthermore, the relative intensities of these diagnostic signals reflect the compositions of the epoxide resins in a quantitative manner.

Notes: An XPS analysis of a ferricyanide accelerated chromate paint pretreatment film found iron in the form of both a ferricyanide and a ferrocyanide ion. Chromium occurred in at least two different chemical environments, one of which was as a hydrated oxide. Aluminium and fluorine probably occurred together although the analysis was not conclusive in this respect. More positive evidence is available elsewhere. The behaviour of the elements on ion etching was consistent with a model of the film comprised mainly of hydrated chromium oxide microcrystallites covered with a monolayer of ferricyanides. Escape depth calculations and correlation of semiquantitative analysis with chemical and energy-dispersive analyses of the film were also consistent with this model. Adsorption of ferricyanides on the surface of the precipitating particles of the growing film provides an explanation for their role as accelerators of film growth.
