Notes: In this paper we study parameter families of truncated horseshoes as models of multiscattering systems which show a transition to chaos without losing hyperbolicity, so that the topological features of the transition are completely describable by a parametrized family of symbolic dynamics. At a fixed parameter value the corresponding horseshoe represents the set of orbits trapped in the scattering region. The bifurcations are a pure boundary effect and no other bifurcations such as saddle center bifurcations occur in this transition scenario. Truncated horseshoes actually arise in concrete potential scattering under suitable conditions. It is shown that a simple scattering model introduced earlier can realize this scenario in a certain parameter range (the "truncated sawshoe''). For this purpose, we solve the inverse scattering problem of finding the central potential associated to the sawshoe model. Furthermore, we review classification schemes for the transition to chaos of truncated horseshoes originating from symbolic dynamics and formal language theory and apply them to the truncated double horseshoe and the truncated sawshoe.

Notes: 7Li recoil tracks in LexanR formed as a product of irradiation with thermal neutrons give an image of in sifu-microdistribution of boron in dioritic to granitic rocks of the Caledonian Ballachulish zoned complex and in a carbonate rock from its contact aureole. The images exhibit a polyphase incorporation of boron into primary and secondary minerals. The boron microdistribution is inhomogeneous. Isomorphous incorporation of boron into pyroxene and plagioclase during the main stage of crystallization cannot be established, because the boron distribution is blurred by secondary alteration. In contrast to the intracrystalline feature, the crystal interfaces are enriched in boron. Increased concentrations are also disclosed by overgrowths of primary crystals, exsolution lamellae in alkali feldspar and alteration rims of clinopyroxene. The highest amounts of boron in a siliceous dolomite marble of the contact aureole are found in the alteration products of olivine.

Notes: Eight reference samples from the U.S. Geological Survey have been analysed for their contents of F, Cl and water. After pyrolysis F was determined with an ion-selective electrode, Cl by colorimetry and water by Karl-Fischer titration.

Notes: Twelve different biostandards from the Inter-Institute Comittee for studying analytical techniques for leaves (CII) contain fluorine in the range of 6 to 37 ppm. It is known that biological samples from areas affected by fluorine emission may contain up to 1000 ppm of F or more. After keeping the reference samples for two hours at 500°C, weight losses between 67 and 78% are observed; the fluorine losses are between 40 and 85%. If conventional analytical techniques are used, an ashing procedure is necessary before the samples could be fused. By using pyrohydrolytical technique the ashing step is omitted and, hence, any loss of fluorine can be avoided.

Notes: Thirty-three reference samples from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG, France), Association Rationale de la Recherche Technique (ANRT, France), National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM, South Africa), Geotechnic Institute (GI, Austria), Mineralogical Institute of Basel and Bern (Switzerland), Zentrales Geolo-gisahes Institut (ZG1, DDR) and from the For-chungeinstitut der Zementinduatrie (Düsseldorf, GDF) were analysed for their fluorine and total water content. Fluorine was determined, after pyrohydrolysis, with an ion-selective electrode. Total water was determined, after pyrolysis, by Karl-Fischer titration. Our values, five determinations on each sample, are compared with the preferred values.
