    Notes: Abstract Here we present the high-level operators of the Mechanical Analysis Module, which is a software architecture dedicated to a better integration of the structural analysis phase within an integrated Computer-Aided Design environment. This generic module is independent of the mechanical analysis method used, and takes place in a distributed software architecture of an integrated design environment. The paper shows that the mechanical operators defined are split among geometric and mechanical treatments in order to enforce this distributed architecture. Thus, the interface between the geometric treatments and the mechanical analysis environment shows the adequacy of the boolean operators when used with mechanical analysis treatments. However, this is demonstrated for a restricted domain of the mechanical analysis, and open ended questions still exist as to when the geometry of the models is diversified. Also, requirements for new geometric treatments and extensions of the current geometric representation are listed.

    Notes: Abstract Two problems of the optimal damping of skis with the use of an improved genetic algorithm (GA) are presented. The first problem is the optimal location of viscoelastic constrained layers; the second problem is the optimization of the stacking sequence with or without variable layer thicknesses. It is demonstrated that the GA is a very attractive and powerful method for these problems in which the objective function has no derivatives and several optimal solutions simultaneously exist.

    Notes: Abstract To damp the flexural vibrations of homogeneous beams or plates in a large frequency range, one of the most efficient methods is the use of constrained viscoelastic layers. Since most of the damping ability is due to shearing stresses in the viscoelastic layer, it is interesting to determine the most appropriate distribution of the shear in the layers. This paper presents the influence of a new parameter involved in this repartition, i.e. the distribution of cuts in the elastic constraining layer. It will be demonstrated that modal damping may be significantly modified in this way. The number and the locations of the cuts may vary and are determined to optimize the damping. The vibrating beam modal analysis is performed by a finite element analysis using special finite elements which have variable d.o.f. in order to take into account the lack of continuity of the viscoelastic constrained displacement field. Using a genetic algorithm, an optimal distribution of the cuts has been determined for a maximum damping of one or serval flexural modes.

    Notes: Abstract This work examines the possibility of using a to nature adopted, stochastic search method, called genetic algorithm (GA), for optimizing the damping ability of composites. The principles and properties of GAs are briefly described, and an approach to evaluating and optimizing the factor of dampness of composites, using a specific GA combined with an existing FEM program, is given. Some results of optimizing the stacking sequences and the thicknesses of the layers, consisting of different materials, are presented as examples of composite beams in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

    Notes: Abstract Optimization of three-dimensional parts is viewed here as optimization of the real design parameters found in geometric modellers, thus ensuring a part is usable in any further CAD treatment. Use of such a technique within the industrial design process is discussed. The B-Rep modelling technique forms the basis for the part geometry parameters. Design parameters are chosen or built up from these. A bi-directional link between surface description and location of nodes is described and provides good compatibility between the boundary geometry and the mesh throughout the optimization loops. Thus, objective and constraint functions both come from structure analysis and geometry implications. The necessary gradient computation of a mechanical criterion with respect to node location is processed by a method using an adjoin equation and a material derivative approach. An existing industrial mechanical solver can then be used, without any change being necessary: each development is performed using CAD software.

    Notes: Abstract The design of fabric structures incorporates specfic aspects due to the tight interdependency between geometric, mechanical and manufacturing data used by the different professional partners. This is highlighted through the analysis of the various steps of the design process. A design approach, that takes into account the various actors, their knowledge and the techniques available within each of the previous fields has been set up. This approach relies on the identification of the flow of information and on the organization of data sets that are compatible with the design process breakdown into tasks in order to preserve their integration. Approximation methods are associated with some of this information to create design phases adapted to each actor through software tools implementing various modelling processes. The form finding process, the mechanical analysis of the structure, the determination of cutting patterns are examples of such modelling processes. The surface model of the fabric structure is one of such sets of data which has been identified and used to preserve the integration of the design process. Associated with the integrated design architecture, a collaborative environment helps to set up communication between some of the actors according to the design process organization. This environment acts as a complementary tool to help seeking compromises among the actors participating in a given phase of the design process. The communication tools work on a distributed architecture in such a manner that dialogue objects are shared among the actors.

    Notes: The new method presented here is capable of building finite element meshes and managing their adaptation simultaneously to the object load case and geometry before any calculations, i.e. an a priori mesh adaptation is conducted. The principle relies on an analogy between a finite element mesh and the equilibrium position of a network of branches. Each branch is adequately sized by setting force-length ratios, called force densities. Starting from these data, the nodal co-ordinates are obtained through the solution of a linear system which describes the equilibrium state of the net. This method seems very attractive since the only given data are: a connectivity table, the number of boundary and interior nodes and a geometrical description of the boundaries.It is also demonstrated how to obtain the equilibrium nodal positions when boundary nodes are allowed to slide and evolution laws of force densities cope with punctual forces and geometric singularities. A comparison of results is conducted between meshes issued by the new technique and those obtained with standard FE codes.

    Notes: An adaptive process controlling the position of nodes on a surface mesh is presented. The control can depend on one (or more) criterion(ria) about element quality. The mesh is attached, through the concept of classification, to a geometric model issued by a computer aided design software. Thus, the surface domain is described by entities currently available in such systems, i.e. any free-form patches like Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline or Bézier patches can be used, even if they are restricted. Multi-connected surface domains can be treated using the same geometrical definition. The method described allows nodes to slide on a patch or jump from a patch onto another one. Such movements greatly improve the mesh quality with regard to a chosen criterion. Problems occurring with patch-by-patch meshing techniques when surfaces patches exhibit significant size differences are then overcome. The adaptation technique can be made independent of CAD data structures and meshing techniques, hence it constitutes the basis of a mesh management module.
