    Notes: Summary δ13C values were measured for 45 Poaceae species collected in the northern Sahara desert, at the foot of the Saharan Atlas. The results indicate a clear relationship between carbon isotope discrimination and phytogeographical distribution of the grasses. Mediterranean species predominantly had δ13C values indicating the C3 pathway of photosynthesis. By contrast, nearly all species belonging to the Saharo-Arabian and /or Sudanian group showed a C4 like carbon isotope composition. Leaf material of two species, Lygeum spartum and Stipa tenacissima, had δ13C values in the region of-20‰, i.e. intermediate between the mean δ13C values of C3 and C4 plants. However, additional speciments of both these grasses obtained from a different source (herbarium of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem) yielded a C3 like carbon isotope composition.

The mineral ion composition and the occurrence of CAM-like diurnal malate fluctuations in species from 6 field locations in Israel and the Sinai were studied during the spring of 1974. The sites were a) a salt swamp near Acre on the Mediterranean Sea shore in the northern part of Israel, b) the high coast near Tel Aviv, c) the southern Dead Sea area near Sedom, d) the Negev highlands surrounding the ancient town of Avdat, e) the Wadi Paran in the southern Negev desert, and f) the Red Sea shore near the southeastern tip of the Sinai peninsula close to the Bedouin village of Nabek. The carbon assimilatory organs of the plants were analysed for Na+, K+, Cl− and SO4 2- as well as for malate at dawn and dusk. 2. Most species analysed are characterized by high levels of mineral ions (mainly Na+/and Cl−) often exceeding 300–400 μeq per g fresh weight, and by high Na+/K+ ratios in their tissues mainly ranging from 10 to 20. These typical halophytic attributes are particularly found in species of the Acre salt swamp, of the Dead Sea area and the Red Sea shore and in many species of the Negev highlands. 3. In plants occupying the Tel Aviv high coast habitats Na+ and Cl− are lower averaging 100 to 200 μeq per g fresh weight. The Na+/K+ ratio is about 5. 4. Numerous species mainly inhabiting the less saline loessial plains and wadis of the Negev desert contain only up to 100 μeq Na+ and Cl− per g fresh weight and are characterized by Na+/K+ ratios of about 1 and below. 5. The salt-accumulating species of the coastal habitats contain Na+ and Cl− in more or less equivalent amounts, i.e. halophytes of the “chloride type” in the terminology of Walter dominate these sites. In contrast, many inland halophytes chiefly belonging to the Chenopodiaceae accumulate much more Na+ than Cl− and/or SO4 2-. 6. The special feature of Na+ contents which far exceed the sum of Cl− and SO4 2- distinguishes the inland Chenopodiaceae as a “physiotype” from members of other taxa. The Zygophyllaceae included in this study form a further “physiotype” which is characterized by higher Cl− than Na+ concentrations. 7. Five species of the Aizoaceae family investigated showed no special pattern of mineral ion content. 8. Certain species, especially some belonging to the Brassicaceae, showed a slight malate accumulation during the day. 9. CAM-like diurnal malate fluctuations were only observed in four species: the halophytic Aizoaceae Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, M. forsskalii and M. nodiflorum and the non-halophytic Asclepiadaceae Caralluma It is suggested that, among halophytes, the capability to perform CAM is generally restricted to members of the Aizoaceae.

    Notes: Summary More than 500 species of the Poaceae are found in Kenya, East Africa. Eighteen of twenty-seven tribes are exclusively (except the Paniceae and Danthonieae) of the C3 photosynthetic type. A floristic analysis of low altitude grasslands suggests that nearly all species at these low altitudes are of the C4 photosynthetic type. At high altitudes, however, nearly all grasses are of the C3 photosynthetic type. Open grassland vegetation was sampled along a transect from arid low altitude sites to the top of Mt. Kenya in an attempt to document the general distributions of the photosynthetic types. The major tribes illustrated three general patterns of distribution. The C4 tribes Chlorideae, Eragrosteae, Sporoboleae, and Aristideae were abundant at low altitudes (or low indices of available soil moisture). The Paniceae and Andropogoneae were also exclusively C4 but were more common at intermediate altitudes. The C3 tribes Aveneae, Festuceae, and Agrostideae were found only at high altitudes. In these open grasslands there were no C3 species below 2,000 m and no C4 species above 3,000 m. The variation in δ13C of the live grass vegetation with altitude confirms these distributional patterns and suggests a sharp transition zone between these two photosynthetic types. The photosynthetic type accounts for broad distributions within the Poaceae but these distributions are further modified by characteristics which may be inherent in the tribal groups. Ecological and paleoecological significance of these patterns of distribution are discussed.

    Notes: Summary The quantitative plant species composition of the rumen contents of a large number of individuals from eight East African herbivores was determined by direct visual analysis. All plant species were classified as either C3 or C4, and an estimated δ13C for the rumen sample was calculated. This estimated value was compared to a measured value determined directly from rumen subsample. The two methods of determining quantitative C3 and C4 composition differed by less than 1%, and the isotopic analysis has the advantage of being rapid and totally objective. The isotopic analysis allowed us to differentiate between grazers and browsers and to determine the quantitative dependence of each animal on C3 and C4 photosynthetic types. Kongoni, wildebeest, cattle, and sheep were nearly pure grazers on the Athi Kapiti Plains; and the Grant's gazelle were predominantly browsers. Thompson's gazelle, goast and impala were intermediate. The species most dependent upon browse showed a marked and rapid shift to grass within a few days following rain. This isotopic method may have general utility in the study of East African ecology.

    Notes: Summary In the annual succulent Mesembryanthemum crystallinum growing in situ, the balance between C3 and CAM carbon fixation shifted rapidly in response to changes in water availability. When water was plentiful, M. crystallinum fixed carbon dioxide by the C3 pathway and grew at rates comparable to other C3 species. Under drought conditions, M. crystallinum fixed carbon by the CAM pathway at an average rate which exceeded 1 nanomole of carbon dioxide per square centimeter of leaf surface per second, a very high rate for a CAM plant.

    Notes: Summary Changes in δ13C value, diurnal malate content, water content and Na+, K+ and Cl- content of the annual Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (Aizoaceae) were followed in a natural population on a coastal cliff at the Mediterranean Sea shore close to Caesarea (Israel). Plants germinated in the middle of the rainy season in December 1976/January 1977. Diurnal malate fluctuations in the leaves were not detected until the end of March. Later on, at the start of the dry season, pronounced diurnal changes in malate developed. This was correlated with a progressive change in δ 13C value from about -26‰ to about -16‰ which is consistent with a change from normal C3 photosynthetic CO2 fixation to a predominantly nocturnal CO2 assimilation pattern involving Crassulacean Acid Metabolism.

    Notes: Summary The temperature coefficient of the δ13C value over the temperature range 14 to 40° has been measured for plants with different photosynthetic pathways. C3 plants (6 species) had a temperature coefficient of-0.0125‰/o, C3 plants (5 species)-0.046‰/o, “C4-like” CAM (2 species)-0.13‰/o and “C3-like” CAM (2 species)-0.019‰/o. The relative temperature insensitivity of the δ13C value is in contrast with the measured temperature dependence of δ13C values for ribulose-diphosphate carboxylase in vitro, and to the temperature response of photosynthesis. The temperature sensitivity of the “C4-like” CAM plants was the relatively greatest; this is consistent with the evidence that high night temperature inhibits dark CO2 fixation. The same inhibition may occur in the “C3-like” CAM plants but it would not have as significant an effect on the δ13C value as these plants are primarily dependent on primary fixation of exogenous CO2 via the ribulose-diphosphate carboxylase reaction.
