Notizen: Abstract The dielectric properties of conducting polymer composites containing polypyrrole (PPy) crushed films, PPy powder, polyaniline (PAn) base and acid powders as the dispersants and silicone rubber and vinyl ester as matrix materials have been investigated in the frequency range 2-18 GHz. The dielectric parameters such as the real part, ε′, and imaginary part, ε″, of the permittivity and loss tangent, tanδ, increase with increasing conductivity and concentration of the dispersant. The geometrical shape of the dispersant governs the ability of conductive network formation which is indicated by a large drop in the resistivity of the composite. Also, dispersant/matrix interactions and physical properties of the matrix influence the agglomeration of the dispersant phase which, in turn, affects the dielectric properties of the composites. Flakes of PPy obtained by crushing highly conductive films and large PAn powder aggregates were unable to form a conducting network. The composites without a network of dispersant exhibit low dielectric parameters. On the other hand, high values of tan δ ranging from 0.7–1.1 were achieved for the PPy powder (15 parts)/silicone rubber composites where a conducting network was observed.

Notizen: Abstract Reflection of microwave radiations from single layer and two-layer materials is calculated. Microwave absorbing materials are formulated by mixing a commercially available paint or rubber with the conducting polypyrrole (PPy) powder. The reflection loss strongly depends on thickness and complex permittivity of the material. For a single layer material, optimum values of the real part, ɛ′, and imaginary part, ɛ′′, of the complex permittivity are found by calculations which lead to a minimum reflectivity at a given sample thickness. The ability to readily tailor the conductivity of the PPy powder enables the design of microwave absorbers according to theoretical desired values of ɛ′ and ɛ′′. A paint panel containing 2 wt% of PPy powder with a thickness of 2.5 mm exhibits a reflectivity 〈 − 10 dB (i.e. at least 90% absorption of the incident radiation) over 12 to 18 GHz. Blending and milling during the manufacturing process can destroy the original fibrous shape of PPy aggregates leading to low radiation absorption. In an attempt to achieve a broadband absorber, a two-layer system consisting of a first layer containing PPy powder and a second layer containing carbonyl iron has been fabricated.

Notizen: The effect of physical aging on the fracture behavior, crack opening displacement, and plastic deformation zone of unmodified and rubber-modified epoxies was determined at two aging temperatures and different displacement rates. The strain energy release rate decreases to between 40 and 50% (for rubber modified and unmodified samples, respectively) of the unaged values after 35 days aging. Systematic dependence of the decrease in fracture toughness by aging on the rubber content is not apparent. The increased yield stress after physical aging is the main factor contributing to the reduction in fracture toughness, crack opening displacement, and plastic deformation zone. Physical aging suppresses the crack blunting mechanisms in epoxies.

Notizen: Fatigue crack propagation in a notched specimen under cyclic loading was investigated for a series of experimental composite resins and six commercial composites. The fatigue resistance was measured as a function of filler content, water absorption, and post-curing temperature. Constants A and m of the Paris law have been obtained by linear regression analysis. The plot of fatigue resistance against volumetric filler content, V shows a sigmoidal relationship wiht a rapid increase in the range of V = 40-50% then tapering off at higher V. A substantial increase in the constant m of the Paris law was found for water-saturated commercial composite resins. Although increasing the post-curing temperature from 37°C to 70°C results in a 10% increase in fracture resistance, a high post-curing temperature is not favorable for highly filled composites (V 〉 60%) where more strained areas can be induced unless polymerization shrinkage is minimal. The ranking of fracture resistance for the commercial materials is: Occlusin 〉 P30 ≃ Adaptic II ≃ Ful-Fil 〉 Isomolar 〉 LC33. Based on the assumption that microcrack growth in the subsurface damage layer is the precursor of wear, fatigue resistance combined with fracture toughness satisfactorily predicted the clinical wear of commercial composites. Surface microfracture which amplifies the subsurface flaw size and creates undesirable stress concentrators can be subdued by high fracture toughness. In addition, high fatigue resistance retards the formation of wear particles, thereby reducing loss of material from the composite surface.
