    Notizen: Abstract The character of the nuclear abundances synthesized under explosive carbon, oxygen and silicon burning conditions is demonstrated to be dependent upon the initial metal content of the star. Specifically, for metal-poor stars, the calculated abundances both of odd-Z nuclei and of the neutron rich isotopes of even-Z nuclei are found to be substantially reduced. This odd-even effect inZ is consistent with spectral studies of metal deficient stars.

    Notizen: Abstract The observational properties and outburst histories of each member of the small class of recurrent novae are reviewed, with the objective of identifying the outburst mechanisms for these systems. Examples are found of both accretion-powered outbursts (T CrB and RS Oph) and thermonuclear-powered outbursts (T Pyx and U Sco). Outburst properties which might be used in future to distinguish between these mechanisms are identified. Many erstwhile recurrent novae (VY Aqr, RZ Leo, V616 Mon, V1195 Oph, V529 Ori, WZ Sge, and V1017 Sgr) appear to be misclassified examples of other types of cataclysmic variables.

    Notizen: Abstract The rates of electron capture on heavier elements under the extreme conditions predicted for dwarf star supernovae have been computed, incorporating modifications that seem to be indicated by present experimental results. An estimate of the maximum possible value of such rates is also given. The distribution of nuclei in nuclear statistical equilibrium has been calculated for the range of expected supernovae conditions, including the effects of the temperature dependence of nuclear partition functions. These nuclide abundance distributions are then used to compute nuclear equilibrium thermodynamic properties. The effects of the electron capture on such equilibrium matter are discussed. The results of supernova numerical hydrodynamics incorporating the computed equilibrium properties and the influence of electron capture are presented. In the context of the ‘carbon detonation’ supernova model, the dwarf central density required to assure core collapse to a neutron star configuration is found to be slightly higher than that obtained by Bruenn (1972) with the electron capture rates of Hansen (1966).

    Notizen: Abstract The steady flow approximation to ther-process has been used to evaluate the validity of the waiting point assumption (that, for a given charge numberZ, neutron captures become balanced by neutron photodisintegrations) under a variety of conditions. The criterion for the accuracy of the approximation for any set of nuclei with the same value ofZ is that the ratio of the total rate of neutron photodisintegration in those nuclei to the total rate of neutron captures should be close to unity. We have failed to find any set of conditions involving neutron production by helium thermonuclear reactions (at temperatures up to 109 K) for which the waiting point approximation is useful for all values ofZ, and we recommend that all suchr-process calculations not use this approximation. At higher temperatures, such as those characteristic of explosive carbon burning (2×109 K), the waiting point approximation is much better.

    Notizen: Abstract We suggest that the unidentified fission xenon component in carbonaceous chondrites may be attributable to the decay of the extinct radioactivities250Cm and, to a lesser extent,258Cm. Two assumptions are fundamental to this picture: (1) these relatively short-lived actinides (1.13×104 and 3.7×105 yr, respectively) were incorporated into grains in the vicinity of their supernova birthplace (prior to decay); and (2) such grains and their trapped anomalous xenon component were incorporated intact into the meteorites. Recognizing the many substantial uncertainties associated with our suggested model, we emphasize the importance of precise experimental determinations of the mass spectra of fission xenon resulting from250Cm and248Cm decay.
