Notes: The exciton dynamics in InxGa1−xAs/GaAs quantum wells grown on (111)B and (100) GaAs substrates were studied by time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) under magnetic fields in a Faraday configuration. We have found that the piezoelectric fields in (111)B samples affect the transient behavior of the PL spectra. Compared with the reference (100) sample, we have found that the strong piezoelectric fields, as well as the magnetic fields, cause a slower spin–flip process in (111)B strained quantum wells. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots have been grown directly on (111)B GaAs substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The island growth mode, which causes quantum dot formation, is due to the 2×2 surface reconstruction as the growth temperature is lowered. It is not related to the Stranski–Krastanov growth mechanism because the nominal thickness of InGaAs used is far below the critical thickness and no wetting layer is found. Atomic force microscope images indicate island formation with the growth temperature below 480 °C. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of quantum dots show large peak shifts compared with the reference quantum well of the same nominal thickness of InGaAs. The PL emission from the quantum dots is strong and the peaks are narrow. A linewidth as low as 8.5 meV at 8 K has been measured, indicating excellent quality. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Abnormal contrast enhancement was seen in 196 (39.8%) of 492 CT scans performed on patients for evaluation of head trauma. It proved most helpful in the diagnosis of isodense subdural hematomas and contusions. The advantages of contrast-enhanced CT scans in the evaluation of head trauma more than compensate for the additional time in performing the examination.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Trois cas d'hematome epidural spontane sout presentes.
Notes: Summary Three cases of spontaneous epidural hematoma are presented with their clinical, anatomical and roentgenographic features and with a review of the literature consisting of 51 cases since condition was first reported by R. Jackson in 1869. The authors emphasize the Brown-Sequard syndrome with epidural lesions and point out the possible etiology of this entity.

Notes: Summary The case of a syphilitic gumma in the cerebellopontine angle is reported. The angiographic appearance of neurosyphilis is similar to that of cerebral inflammatory processes of all varieties. The hypervascularity of the blush shown on angiography is due to hyperemia surrounding the focal necrosis. Vasoconstriction and dilatation may be seen with meningovascular syphilis and gummata. This case showed a focal hypervascularized lesion unlike the avascular lesions described in the textbooks.

Notes: Abstract The effects of methyl jasmonate (MJ) and abscisic acid (ABA) on some physiological processes of rice were compared. MJ exhibited ABA-like effects by promoting senescence of detached leaves, by inducing acid phosphatase activity of detached leaves, by inhibiting ethylene production and shoot growth of seedlings, as well as inhibiting callus formation from anthers. However, MJ and ABA had opposite effects on 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid-dependent ethylene production in detached leaves. The regeneration ability of anther-derived callus was inhibited by MJ but not by ABA. MJ but not ABA markedly induced peroxidase activity in senescing detached leaves. It is concluded that not all physiological processes of rice affected by MJ are similar to those by ABA.

Notes: Abstract The role of ethylene in jasmonate-promoted senescence of detached rice leaves was investigated. Ethylene production in methyl jasmonate-treated leaf segments of rice was lower than in the control leaves. Treatment of leaf segments with silver nitrate or/and silver thiosulfate, inhibitors of ethylene action, inhibited methyl jasmonate-, jasmonic acid-, linolenic acid-, and abscisic acid-promoted senescence of detached leaves. We suggest that an increase in ethylene sensitivity, but not ethylene level, is the initial event triggering the enhanced senescence by jasmonates of detached rice leaves.
