    Notes: Summary Weekly zooplankton samples were taken during the period February, 1972 to January, 1973 at station III in a shallow and turbulent tropical reservoir (Broa Reservoir, São Carlos, São Paulo, State-Brazil). The samples were taken by plankton standard net with 68 μ mesh size, and collected through the horizontal hawls during 3 min. Rotifera was the most abundant group with 77.6%; Cladocera 13.6%, and Copepoda 8.7% (adult and naupliae stages). Other forms like Chaoborus larvae and some worms occurred sporadically. The seasonal fluctuation of the total zooplankton was very irregular in warm and rainy season and more stable in the dry and cold season. The composition of the zooplankton and its patterns of seasonal variation for eutrophic and oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems, in tropical regions, may differ significantly from temperate waters.

    Notes: Abstract Six genera of Clad ocera (Diaphanosoma, Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia, Moina, Bosmina, Bosminopsis), each of them usually with only one species were found in Lake D. Helvecio, a natural valley lake located in the eastern part of Brazil. Diurnal migratory movements of the organisms observed in this lake showed a different pattern in different species. Closely related species, which explore the same food source, live in different layers, thus avoiding interspecific competition. The migratory behaviour of the species was studied mainly in relation to temperature and oxygen distribution in the lake. Thus, analyses were made in the summer (January, 1978) when a strong stratification occurs with the establishment of a thermocline and an oxycline. Comparisons were made also with the data obtained in winter (July, 1978), when a complete mixing of water occurs.

    Notes: Abstract We analyzed the effects of planktivorous Holeshestes heterodon Eigenmann (Characidae) predation on the plankton community of a small subtropical reservoir, using four enclosures (volume about 17.5 m3), open to the sediment, established in the littoral zone. Two enclosures were stocked with fish (mean TL 5.7 cm), at a density of about 4–5 fish m−3 (approx. 8 g m−3), whereas two remained fishless. The experiment lasted a little longer than one month. In the fish enclosures, most Crustacea and Chaoborus larvae remained scarce, probably as a result of visually selective fish predation. In both fishless enclosures, Chaoborus larvae became abundant. However, in only one of these did large individuals become relatively numerous; this discrepancy in the demographic structure of the Chaoborus populations between the two fishless enclosures is unexplained. Only in the fishless enclosure without appreciable numbers of large Chaoborus did densities of Crustacea increase greatly. It is suggested that in the enclosure containing large Chaoborus individuals, crustacean populations were prevented from developing due to predation pressure, while the small Chaoborus larvae of the other enclosure could not readily consume these prey. Rotifers were low in abundance in the absence of fish, probably as a consequence of Chaoborus predation. Phytoplankton density increased in all four enclosures, due probably to the lack of water flow. Only in the fishless enclosure with high densities of crustaceans did phytoplankton abundance decrease markedly at the end of the experiment, perhaps because of grazing losses.

    Notes: Abstract An optimum medium for culturing Melosira italica (subsp. subartica) is described. The optimum concentration of humic acid for growth of this species in culture was found to be 46 µg/ml. Tolerance to cupric ions also increased by addition of humic acid. Cultures tended to maintain a pH of about 6.0. Some ecological implications are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of enrichment with phosphate (0–500 µg. 1−1) and forms of nitrogen (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia an and urea) (0–3500 µgg. −1) on the phytoplankton growth of Lobo Reservoir (Brazil) were studied in July, 1979. Suspended matter, chlorophyll a, cell concentrations and the carotenoid:cchlorophyll ratio were estimated following 14 days of ‘in situ’ incubation. Phosphate alone caused no significant effects, but enrichment with nitrogen caused a substantial increase on the growth of phytoplankton. Comparison between the different forms of nitrogen showed insignificant effects after their additions with 350 µg. −1 and in combination with phosphate. However, when nitrogen was added in large quantities (3 500 µg. −1), significant differences between the nitrogeneous forms were found, with urea causing the strongest effect. In July, nitrogen is mhe main limiting nutrient to phytoplankton growth of Lobo Reservoir.

    Notes: Abstract The dominance patterns of the main zooplankton groups depend on whether they are analysed by numerical density or dry weight. This fact is discussed in relation to the trophic state of the system. Biomass of planktonic crustaceans from Broa reservoir was analysed by dry weight. For Argyrodiaptomus furcatus organic carbon was also determined. Values of 4.42 µg C ind.−1 and 6.83 µg C ind.−1 were obtained for males and females, respectively. Seasonal fluctuation of the species showed two peaks of abundance: the rainy season (summer), and the windy period (winter), these factors being thus the principal controlling forces for the growth of the populations.
