    Notes: Fifty four varieties of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were screened for resistance to bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas malvacearum E. F. Smith, (Dowson) under natural field conditions and artificial Inoculation. In general, moderately high levels of field infection provided useful information on susceptibility of varieties but 11 needed to be1 supplemented with artificial inoculation to confirm resistance. Hypocotyl regions of one week-old seedlings were subjected to artificial inoculation with bacterial blight crude isolate using hypodermic needles. None of the fifty lour varieties tested was immune to disease 18.5 % showed a high level of resistance, 29.6 % were recorded as resistant while 20.4 % were susceptible. Another 18.5 % were highly susceptible and 13.0 % showed inconsistent disease reaction under natural field conditions. However, under artificial inoculation the seedlings showed lesions of varied sizes but none of the varieties was found to be resistant. Statistical analysis showed non-significant (P = 0.05) disease interaction indicating susceptibility to disease at the seedling stage. This may be due to lower levels of resistance in seedlings than in mature cotton plants. The resistant varieties were mainly of African origin and well adapted to local conditions. They are therefore potentially useful as commercial varieties in their own right or as donor parents for blight resistance.

    Notes: Summary Inheritance of resistance to cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch, in three resistant cultivars of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, was studied. The parents, F1 and F2 population were grown in an insect-proof screenhouse. Each 3-day-old seedling was infested with 10 apterous adult aphids. Seedling reaction was recorded when the susceptible check was killed. The segregation data revealed that the resistance of ICV11 and TVU310 is governed by single dominant genes. All the F2 seedlings of the cross ICV10xTVU310 were resistant, indicating that they have the same gene for resistance. However, the F2 populations from the crosses ICV10xICV11 and ICV11xTVU310 segregated in a ratio of 15∶1, indicating that the dominant genes in ICV11 and TVU310 are non-allelic and independent of each other. The resistance gene of ICV10 and TVU310 is designated as Ac1 and that of ICV11 as Ac2.

    Notes: Abstract  Pollen fertility and compatibility status were investigated in three species of mangroves: Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Rhizophora samoensis, R. stylosa and a hybrid between the two Rhizophora species. Pollen fertility was greater than 80% in the three species but less than 10% in the hybrid. Also, all three species were intraspecifically compatible, while the hybrid showed very low compatibility which may be due to its low pollen fertility. The genera Bruguiera and Rhizophora were found to be completely cross incompatible, while a low reciprocal cross compatibility was observed in interspecific crosses between Rhizophora stylosa and R. samoensis.

    Notes: Abstract The study of the flood-waters revealed that the breach of irrigation channels due to heavy downpour, triggered the floods, as the first flood-waters largely contained characteristic riverine fauna. Later on, the riverine fauna was outnumbered by pond fauna indicating the overflow from ponds, adding to the amount of flood-waters. The flood-waters play a significant role in the distribution of animals in general and vectors in particular. The chief vectors included Cyclops, Lymnaea, Planorbis and five genera of fishes. Pockets of stagnant flood-water provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes to create a future nuisance. The faunal study of flood-waters offers a proof to their origin, which otherwise requires a manual survey.

    Notes: Summary Two diverse parents of upland cotton namely J.34 and I.C. 1926 were crossed. A comparison between biparental intermated progenies and F3 families indicated alteration of correlation coefficient between yield and halo length. The significant negative correlation in F3 population between these two attributes changed to a positive but non significant one in biparental intermated progenies. A change in correlation coefficients was expected due to breakage of linkage upon intermating. An increase in the correlation coefficients could also be expected when linkages are predominantly in the repulsion phase. It is suggested that intermating in early generations coupled with selection of desirable segregants may prove a useful method for improving yield and quality simultaneously. The diallel selective mating system may also supplement intermating to improve yield and quality in cotton.
