    Notes: Summary To clarify whether thrombus organisation was carried out by local cell activity or by elements of the circulating blood we developed an artifical prosthesis, made of an impermeable polyurethane material with an athrombogenic surface but with a central part consisting of a DACRON velour ring which was thrombogenic. We implanted these devices into the aorta of 10 sheep. In these animals, organisation of the central thrombus by local aortic cells could be excluded. After varying periods of time (2–84 days), the device was removed and the organized thrombus investigated by light and electron microscopy. From our investigations the organisation process with the development of mesenchymal cellular elements proceeded in 3 steps: (1) The activation of the mononuclear macrophage system (2), the appearance of myofibroblastic cells and (3) endothelial formation. The activation of the mononuclear macrophage system is probably induced by chemospecific products of metabolism arising from aging thrombotic material. Apart from mononuclear elements such as monocytes, macrophages, and giant cells we observed fibroblast-like and myofibroblast-like cells. The matrix contained collagen. Endothelium developed on the surface of the organizing thrombus. The final stage was characterized by the formation of a pseudovessel wall, which followed the pattern of the vascular model. Our findings support the hypothesis that a thrombus may be organized by cells derived from the circulating blood.

    Notes: Abstract A novel oxidase activity of external NADH was found in mitochondria of a streptomycin-bleached mutant and the wild strain of Euglena gracilis. In contrast to higher plants the oxidation of external NADH in mitochondria of E. gracilis is sensitive to rotenone and yields the same phosphorylation efficiency as the matrix pool of NADH. Simulation of this activity by the classic complex I of the matrix side of the mitochondrial membrane, as a result of preparation-generated artefacts, is excluded. The external NADH-dehydrogenase activity is bound to the inner mitochondrial membrane with its active side facing the cytosol. State-4 enzyme activity is only slightly influenced by pH in the physiological range, whereas state-3 oxidation indicates an optimum in the physiological pH, as expected from a limitation by the ATPase. The external redox potential of NADH does not control enzyme activity. The results are discussed with respect to the metabolic status of the cells at the time of harvesting.

    Notes: Soluble 4,4′-bis(dimethylamino)diphenylmethyl ethers of cellulose (2) with a degree of substitution from 0,5 to 1,0 were prepared by therification of cellulose dissolved in N,N-dimethylacetamide/LiCl. These ethers 2 show typical absorption spectra with an absorption maximum at 265 nm. While in neutral and basic medium 2 are stable, under acidic conditions a significant cleavage of the ether bonds occurs and thereby the formation of Michler's hydrol blue (absorption maximum at 604 nm). 2 was found to be photoconducting as film cast from a N,N-dimethylformamide solution, for instance. Preliminary studies of the behavior of solutions of 2 by irradiation by means of flash photolysis and UV spectroscopy were carried out as well.
