    Notes: A 2116bp segment of the bacteriophage T4 genome encompassing the motA regulatory gene has been sequenced. In addition to motA, five open reading frames were identified in the direction of early transcription. The motA gene encodes a basic protein of 211 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 23559. Measurements of the rate of transcription of motA showed that the promoter of this gene is turned off after only 2 min of T4 development. This early promoter presents a structure which is richer in information than that of a classical constitutive Escherichia coli promoter. In addition to containing conserved sequences centred at -10 and -35, this promoter shares extensive homologies with other subgroups of early promoters in regions centred at +3 and at -55. We discuss the possible role of these different sequence determinants.

    Notes: Summary In the posttraumatic period, measurement of neural tissue enzymes in serum and cerebrospinal fluid gives quantitative information about the severity of the head injury. In our study, we evaluated the relationship between the serum and cerebrospinal fluid levels of neuron specific enolase and the severity of trauma. Head traumas at different severity were applied experimentally (Mild 0.038 N, Moderate 0.057 N, Severe 0.3 N). Serum and cerebrospinal fluid levels of neuron specific enolase were measured in trauma and control groups of rats. Only in the severe trauma group, the neuron specific enolase levels of cerebrospinal fluid were significantly increased. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups when serum neuron specific enolase levels were evaluated. Our data leads us to conclude that trauma, causing significant neural damage, results in an increase in cerebrospinal fluid neuron specific enolase levels, however the serum neuron specific enolase levels do not seem to run parallel with that increase.

    Notes: Summary 115 traumatic extradural haematoma cases who were treated surgically at Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty Neurosurgery Department between 1987 and 1992 are evaluated. When factors affecting the outcome were examined, a strong correlation was found between the result andGlasgow coma scale (GCS) (p〈0.00001). The existence of a fracture, the interval between onset of haematoma symptoms and intervention and the existence of an intracerebral haematoma together with contusion accompanying intradural haematoma, affect the outcome in a negative direction. There was no statistical correlation between the outcome and the age of patient, localization of the haematoma and aetiology.

    Notes: Summary The hypothesis that increased generation of lipid peroxides (LP) causes articular cartilage damage in older patients and in those with osteoarthritis was tested by directly measuring LP tissue levels in various layers of human articular cartilage. The LP content was significantly greater in the superficial than in the deeper portion of the cartilage, but lower in cartilage than in liver, kidney, adrenal glands and synovium. When LP were related to the total lipid content of these tissues, a high peroxide per lipid ratio was obtained for articular cartilage. The relevance of these findings to the mechanism of cartilage fibrillation is discussed.
