Notes: A recently marketed direct filling resin, Isosite, does not have an inorganic filler. This material is offered as a hand-mixed, two-paste system (Isopast) and is also available in capsulated form and as an ultraviolet activated sytem. Since it is well known that direct filling resins used hitherto are capable of causing pulpal irritation, especially in deep cavities, the pulpal response to Isopast was investigated. The experimental animals were twenty-four vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Under general anaesthesia a labial cavity was cut in each of the eight incisor teeth (maxillary and mandibular) of each animal. In each animal two cavities were filled with unlined Isopast, two with Isopast over a lining of calcium hydroxide cement, two with silicate cement and two with zinc oxide/eugenol cement. The animals were killed at intervals of 2, 28 and 56 days. The teeth recovered were decalcified and stained for histological examination. Of the total of 192 specimens sixty-five were discarded, two because of accidental pulpal exposure, one because of leakage and sixy-three because of technical defects in the preparation of the material, leaving 126 specimens available for assessment. This was done independently by three examiners who did not know which materials had elicited the reactions observed. It was found that after 2 days unlined Isopast caused more pulpal disturbance than other materials. After 28 and 56 day intervals lined Isopast caused less disturbance than the other materials. The maker's recommendation that linings should be used is confirmed.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the dental health status of a representative sample of Johannesburg Chinese schoolchildren, all 250 attending the only Chinese school in the city. In 18 preschoolchildren, 3-5 years old, 16.7 % were caries-free mean, dmft was 7.1 ± 5.8 and labial caries was present in 33.3 % In 165 primary schoolchildren aged 5-16 years, the mean DMFT was 5.0 ± 3.2 with 20 % of the primary dentition caries-free and the mean DMFT was 2.4 ± 1.9. 4.8 % of the primary schoolchildren were caries-free. In 67 high school pupils of 11–17 years, 4.5 % were caries-free and the mean DMFT score was 7.1 ± 3.9. Caries prevalences among the Chinese were similar to corresponding groups of children of Chinese immigrants in the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

Notes: Abstract An anomalous velocity cloud nearl=349°,b=+3°, was investigated by Cugnon (1968). The authors made a new set of observations in order to obtain a more complete picture of the feature, including the region originally out of Cugnon's limit of observation. A comparison with optical and radio observations was made and several possibilities of interpretation as to the nature of the object were analyzed.

Notes: Abstract In the last twenty years the ionizing effects on matter of60Co γ-rays have been widely discussed. However, regarding organic compounds, mainly aromatic ones, results are scarce, particularly those obtained in alcoholic solution. γ-Radiation is used mainly in industry and medicine, particularly for sterilization of surgical materials. In this work we studied the chemical and radiolytic stability of products by radiation from quinoline in isopropanol solution. Doses were from 2×104 to 3×105 Gy and the samples concentration was 1∶1 by volume. We have observed significant effects for high radiation doses. Lower doses effected the solvent with the production of long polymeric hydrocarbons. Products formed were characterized by capillary gas chromatography coupled to a mass-selective detector (GC/MSD). We have used a fused silica capillary column 25 m long, 0.2 mm in internal diameter, covered by a 0.33 μm thick film of crosslinked 5% phenyl methyl silicone.

Notes: Abstract Description of the morphology of yeast and mycelial forms ofParacoccidioides brasiliensis observed in the electron scanning microscope. Mycelial forms appeared as budding bamboo-like cylinders with multiple septations, yeasts, as spherical masses surrounded by several spherical or bottle-shaped sprouting blastospores; single or catenulated small spherical buds were observed free or attached to the fungal surface. Fungi treated with pooled sera of South American Blastomycosis patients did not show any significant superficial deposits.
