Abstract A sample of 227Brissopsis lyrifera were collected in the Gulf of Lions in the Mediterranean Sea between 60 and 1000 m depth over a 21/2-yr period (June 1983 to November 1985). Males and females were sexually mature at the end of summer. After a period of gonadal inactivity during winter, gametogenesis resumed at the beginning of spiring. The cycle was synchronous over the entire bathymetric range studied. Variations in environmental conditions may be one factor inducing gametogenesis.
