Notes: The temperature dependence of a capacitance of a planar capacitor based on Ba1−xSr1−xTiO3 (BSTO) films was investigated and some anomalies were observed. It was experimentally found that the barium concentration decreased across the film thickness in the direction from film/substrate interface to the film surface. The barium concentration, x, of BSTO films grown on sapphire (r-cut) substrates changed from x=0.52 on the film/substrate interface to x=0.3 on the film surface. The investigated films should be considered as a multiphase composition with different phase transition temperatures. The phenomenological model of dielectric response of the film structure has been suggested, which served as a basis for introducing an effective dielectric permittivity of the layered film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The main interest in the area of practical applications of ferroelectrics, particularly at the microwave frequency, is oriented now to room temperature. In this connection, ferroelectrics like BaxSr1−xTiO3 should be carefully studied. Such materials are characterized by the second order phase transition. In a perfect ferroelectric crystal, the phase transition takes place at temperature TC, which is called the Curie temperature. Real (defected) crystals and ceramic samples are characterized by a presence of built-in electric field and mechanical strains. In the case of the real crystal, the temperature of the phase transition TC′, is displaced to lower temperature and the temperature of the maximum of cursive-epsilon(T)Tm is displaced to higher value with respect to TC. Thus, for the real ferroelectric sample (not for an incipient ferroelectric), one has TC′〈TC〈Tm. Some investigators suppose by default that TC′=TC=Tm. Such a supposition is wrong and can lead to an incorrect treatment of experimental results. In the case of a thin film sample, the phase transition and the dielectric response of a ferroelectric sample are affected by the size of the sample, what is treated as a size effect. Experimental data obtained as a result of measurement of the dielectric constant as a function of temperature can be used for finding the Curie temperature and other parameters of the material. For this procedure, a suitable model of the dielectric response of the ferroelectric sample should be used. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The experimental confirmation of the existence of the electrostriction mechanism of microwave losses in a thin ferroelectric film is discussed. The results of simulation of the dielectric loss tangent due to the mechanism discussed for a planar capacitor with one gap are presented and compared with existing experimental data for an interdigital capacitor. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data. The small discrepancy with experiment could be due to inaccurate determination of the sound velocity in the ferroelectric film and to differences in the capacitor structures used in the simulation and in the experiment.

Notes: Abstract Benefits of ferroelectric component applications at microwaves is discussed. Experience recently gained in the high-temperature film-production technology has been used for obtaining high-quality ferroelectric tunable components. The disk made from bulk SrTiO3 single crystal covered with double-sided YBa2Cu3Y7 films was used as a high-quality TM010 mode tunable resonator. Planar structures containing thin film ferroelectric layers: planar capacitor, sandwich capacitor, coplanar line, and fin line have been studied. Modeling dielectric response of low-temperature incipient ferroelectrics (SrTiO3, KTaO3) has been applied for simulation of tunable planar structures. The quality factor of a tunable component (QFCT) is suggested to characterize the validity of the component for practical applications. The high-quality planar capacitors are pioneered for the applications. The wide frequency band fin line phase shifter has been studied and simulated. The prospects for applications of ferroelectric planar structures at room temperature is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effective input noise temperature T e of a bridge made from a highly oriented YBaCuO film is measured at a frequency of 4.6 GHz. The bridge is brought to a weakly resistive state by a dc current, by microwave radiation at a frequency of 9.4 GHz, or by a combination of the two. Along with the noise temperature, the current-voltage characteristics and impedance of the bridge are also measured at a frequency of 4.6 GHz. At T=78 K the value of T e does not exceed 120 K. Analysis of the results allows one to compare the experimental values of T e with the values determined by the equilibrium Nyquist noise of overheated normal domains and indicates the presence of excess noise at a level comparable to the Nyquist noise.

Notes: Abstract An analytical expression for calculating the wave parameters of a narrow-slot transmission line is found in the quasistatic approximation. A two-fluid model is used for analyzing processes in a superconducting film of thickness comparable to the London penetration depth. The wave parameters of the slotted line are calculated under assumptions about the current distribution near the edges of the slot which are analogous to those used previously for analyzing microstrip and coplanar lines.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is made of the dielectric losses in the microwave range in a planar ferroelectric capacitor caused by electrostrictively excited sound in the ferroelectric in the presence of a bias field (induced piezoeffect). An approximate expression is obtained for the dielectric loss tangent as a function of the bias field and the frequency. Numerical estimates are made for singlecrystal strontium titanate at 78 K. This loss mechanism may be a determining factor for the fabrication of planar capacitors using high-quality ferroelectric films having properties close to those of the single crystal.

Notes: Abstract The equivalent parameters of a Josephson junction in a microwave SQUID structure are calculated on the basis of relations obtained as a result of an analysis of the operation of an rf SQUID. This analysis is based on the sawtooth variation of the voltage on the resonator as a function of the constant flux bias. The quantitative characteristics permit regarding the Josephson junction as a linear impedance in the rf or microwave circuit, whose real and imaginary parts are controlled by the constant magnetic flux passing through the SQUID loop.

Notes: Abstract The capacitance of a two-layer planar capacitor containing a thin layer of SrTiO3 is calculated by conformal mapping using the partial capacitanc e method. Simple formulas are obtained for approximation calculation of the capacitances of individual components of a planar structure, and their limits of applicability are determined. A relation for the capacitance of a planar capacitor is derived which takes account of the size effect in a ferroelectric film within the context of the partial capacitance method. The calculated result is compared with the experimentally measured capacitance.

Notes: Abstract The validity of a phenomenological description of the permittivity as a function of the applied electric field and temperature is checked for real single-crystal strontium titanate samples. It is shown that this model provides a fairly reliable quantitative description of the dependence ɛ(E,T) for isotropic and anisotropic crystals. The model also works well for SrTiO3 films with defects.
