Notes: Summary Metal-containing polyurethanes were prepared from cobalt and copper mono(hydroxyethyl) phthalate with hexamethylene diisocyanate and tolylenediisocyanate and characterized. The presence of ionic links in the polymers was shown by IR spectra, solution viscosity and conductance measurements.

Notes: Summary Divalent metal salts of mono(hydroxyethyl)phthalate (HEP) were considered to be of interest as difunctional ionic monomers and are useful for the preparation of condensation polymers. Recently, Matsuda1 reported the preparation of Ca, Mg and Zn salts of mono-(hydroxyethyl)phthalate and their polymers2–7. He prepared these salts by the reaction of HEP with the respective divalent metal oxides. But so far there was no report on the preparation of Pb2+ and Mn2+ salts of HEP. Since metal dicarboxylates can be obtained by the reaction of organic dibasic acids and metal acetates8, Pb2+ and Mn2+ acetates can similarly react with HEP to give their respective salts at the optimum temperature. We report here the synthesis and characterisation of Pb2+ and Mn2+ salts of mono(hydroxyethyl)-phthalate (HEP).

Notes: Summary Methylmethacrylate and styrene were polymerized with Co(acac)3-AlEt2 Br catalyst system in benzene at 40°C. Rate of polymerization is linear to monomer concentrations. Maximum percent conversion of polymer was obtained when Al/Co⩾2 with styrene and Al/Co⩾3 with methylmethacrylate. With increase in aging time catalytic activity decreases. Activation energy was found to be 60 KJ mol−1. with styrene and 40 KJ mol−1. with methylmethacrylate.

Notes: A series of halogen-containing poly (esterurethane)s was synthesized from the prepolymers, i.e., hydroxy-terminated polyesters containing chlorine and fluorine and the diisocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI). Polyesterification of halogenated phthalic anhydride with an excess of diols such as ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, and 1,4-butanediol in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA) was carried out to prepare prepolymers. The prepolymers and the poly (esterurethane)s were characterized by infrared (IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), viscosity, end-group analysis, solubility and thermal analysis namely thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Kinetics of thermal degradation was also studied. Resistance of the polymers to alkaline agents and combustion was also tested.

Notes: Polymerization of methyl methacrylate was studied with a cobalt acetylacetonate-diethyl zinc catalyst initiator system in benzene medium at 40°C. When the stoichiometric ratio of Zn/Co is 2, the activity for polymerization is found to be maximum. The structure of the obtained polymethyl methacrylate is compared with that obtained using a free-radical initiator such as benzoyl peroxide. The structure of polymer and the M̄w/M̄n values indicate that cobalt acetylacetonate-zinc diethyl system has pronounced free-radical characteristics. A suitable mechanism is proposed from the kinetic studies. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Ether- and ester-based prepolymeric diols suitable for polyurethane elastomer formation were prepared from polyoxytetramethyleneglycol and polyoxytetramethylene-oxypropyleneglycol with dicarboxylic acids like adipic acid, maleicacid, and phthalic acid. Crosslinked polyurethane elastomers were prepared from these prepolymers using various concentrations of trimethylolpropane as a crosslinker and toluenediisocyanate as the curing agent. Crosslinked polyurethanes were also prepared by a method taking excess toluenedisocyanate other than that of the stochiometric requirement and curing it at a comparatively higher temperature. The data on mechanical properties of these elastomers show that both methods of crosslinking in polyurethane imparts a similar effect on mechanical properties.

Notes: Two new polyurethaneoximes containing double and triple bonds in the main chain were prepared. An in situ preparation of 2-butene-1,4-diisocyanate and 2-butyne-1,4-diisocyanate and their polycondensation with dimethylglyoxime yielded polymers of low molecular weight. The UV, IR, NMR, DSC and TGA analyses of these polymers are reported. The possible mechanism of thermal degradation of one of the polymers is discussed.

Notes: Hydroxy-terminated ether- and ester-based prepolymers more suitable for propellant binder applications were prepared from tetrahydrofuran, propyleneoxide, and various discarboxylic acids. Polyurethanes were prepared from these prepolymers with various diisocyanates such as hexamethylenediisocyanate, toluene diisocyanate, and diphenylmethanediisocyanate, and the mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, and elongation of these polyurethane elastomers were compared. The thermal degradation study of these polyurethanes was studied in the atmosphere of oxygen. Composite propellants were formed using these prepolymers as binder resins, toluene diisocyanate as the curing agent, ammonium perchlorate as the oxidizer, and aluminum as the fuel. Propellants having two different solid loadings (85 and 82%) were made and compared with respect to their unloading slurry viscosity and mechanical properties. The tensile strength, elongation, and ballistic performance parameters (theoretical) of these new propellant systems were promising.
