    Notes: Photoreflectance (PR) response of bulk and epitaxially grown Te-doped GaSb samples at the higher energy E0+Δ0 transition has been investigated from 4 K to room temperature. The PR spectra did not exhibit any Franz–Keldysh oscillations and are described using the third derivative of the Lorentzian functional form of the dielectric function. Using line shape analysis of the PR spectra, the temperature dependence of the E0+Δ0 transition energy has been obtained. The value of the E0+Δ0 transition energy in a bulk grown sample, with an electron concentration of about 1.6×1017/cm3, is found to be 1.583 eV at 4 K. For more heavily doped epitaxially grown samples with an electron concentration of 7.4×1017/cm3, the value of E0+Δ0 is determined to be 1.613 eV. The contributions of the many-body effects such as band filling and band gap renormalization on the E0+Δ0 transition are calculated and are used to explain the measured values. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Latitudinal variations in the nighttime plasma temperatures of the equatorial topside ionosphere during northern winter at solar maximum have been examined by using values modelled by SUPIM (Sheffield University Plasmasphere Ionosphere Model) and observations made by the DMSP F10 satellite at 21.00 LT near 800 km altitude. The modelled values confirm that the crests observed near 15° latitude in the winter hemisphere are due to adiabatic heating and the troughs observed near the magnetic equator are due to adiabatic cooling as plasma is transported along the magnetic field lines from the summer hemisphere to the winter hemisphere. The modelled values also confirm that the interhemispheric plasma transport needed to produce the required adiabatic heating/cooling can be induced by F-region neutral winds. It is shown that the longitudinal variations in the observed troughs and crests arise mainly from the longitudinal variations in the magnetic meridional wind. At longitudes where the magnetic declination angle is positive the eastward geographic zonal wind combines with the northward (summer hemisphere to winter hemisphere) geographic meridional wind to enhance the northward magnetic meridional wind. This leads to deeper troughs and enhanced crests. At longitudes where the magnetic declination angle is negative the eastward geographic zonal wind opposes the northward geographic meridional wind and the trough depth and crest values are reduced. The characteristic features of the troughs and crests depend, in a complicated manner, on the field-aligned flow of plasma, thermal conduction, and inter-gas heat transfer. At the latitudes of the troughs/crests, the low/high plasma temperatures lead to increased/decreased plasma concentrations.

    Notes: Results of crystallization kinetics study and x-ray diffraction are in good agreement with our previous rheological and mechanical results. Poly(arylene ether ketones), which are modified by sulfur at concentrations below approximately 2% by weight, have higher crystallization rates owing to the decrease in molecular weight caused by chain scission and/or the presence of sulfur that acts as a nucleating agent. However, all the observed differences in mechanical properties can be rationalized only by the nucleation effect of the sulfur. Upon aging of the sulfur-modified samples, cross linking occurs, leading to decreases in crystallization rates.

    Notes: The equilibrium swelling behavior of end-linked silicone networks has been studied, using low molecular weight silicone oils as diluents. Using the phantom and affine versions of the Flory-Rehner elasticity theory, the predictability of the equilibrium swelling has been examined. It was found that a modified version of the Flory-Rehner equation can be used to predict the equilibrium swelling behavior, provided the interaction parameter is known or measured. The modification is the use of the measured elastic shear modulus of the network prior to swelling, to calculate the density of network chains needed in the equation for swelling. This implies that both entangled and chemically linked chains contribute to the swelling behavior, since the modulus itself is predicted by the use of an equation that incorporates the contribution of entanglements. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Rheological properties of high and low density polyethylene melts (HOPE and LDPE) were measured under two different deformation modes: sinusoidal strain (“dynamic”) and constant rate-of-strain (“steady-state”). For the sinusoidal measurements, a torsional geometry was used, whereas the “steady-state” measurements were carried out in both torsional and capillary flow. The complex and “viscous” components of the “dynamic” viscosity were compared with the “steady-state” viscosities, corrected for both non-Newtonian and end effects. For the HDPEs, the Cox-Merz rule was found to be not valid. The corrected viscosity is closer in magnitude to the “viscous” component, and not to the complex viscosity. However, for the LDPEs, the corrected viscosity is equivalent to the complex viscosity. These results are compared to other correlations found by various authors.

    Notes: The shear moduli of end-linked poly(dimethyl siloxane) networks were measured as a function of mol wt between chemical crosslinks (Mc) and the dilution-at-cure (Cx). The results were interpreted in terms of theories that take into account contributions from trapped entanglements. It was found that the network deformation follows the predictions of the theory of “phantom” networks, with an added contribution from trapped entanglements. At high mol wts of the precursor polymer, network imperfections play a role, as seen in the frequency dependence of the shear modulus. This results in deviation from predicted behavior. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Elemental sulfur has been used to crosslink poly(arylene ether ketone)s. Evidence for crosslinking is presented in terms of rheological data of the melt. The effects of crosslinking on mechanical properties have been examined using tensile creep, stress-relaxation, and dynamic-mechanical properties in torsion. The crosslinking elevates the glass transition temperature (Tg), as measured by the maximum in the loss tangent, and reduces creep strain at temperatures above Tg. A new technique for monitoring cure is also presented. One of the advantages of this method for crosslinking poly(arylene ether ketone)s is that the crosslinking can be carried out both in the solid state and in the melt, the rate being dependent on the temperature (above Tg) of annealing.
